Fastest Re-Entry Challengebut

Recommended Posts

The goal of this challenge is to survive the fastest Kerbin re-entry.

Rules:

You must re-enter kerbin and not another body

Once you touch the atmosphere on return you must seperate all engines.

All command parts that come with you on reentry must land with you alive

Hyperedit can be used but ONLY to get to LKO

The speed is the fastest speed measured in the atmo

You do not have to enter orbit

If I ask you must give me the craft file

Info mods allowed but no mod parts

No ALT+F12

You do not have to have crew on board

You must use KSP 1.0.5

If its not photographed then it didn't happen

Your picture of the speed MUST be taken during the re-entry to get an accurate speed.

Speed is determined in top speed in atmo in m/s and NOT time from top of atmo to ground

Have Fun!!!! :D

Here is my example:

Javascript is disabled. View full album

Good Luck :D

Scores:

1)littlebuddy0 5087.7 m/s

2)Friethjoph 3197.8 m/s

Hmm, and keep the last fuel tanks (but I jetted the ore I brought into space for mass me idiot) till the last moment (about 72k), because Mass + falling = Acceleration! And maybe a Munar Slingshot... And retrograde... I get my vessel out there, but... not faster than 3197.8 m/s...

Proof (almost a movie of photos)

Not faster than 3197.8? Lol. Yesterday I was coming back from Mun at nearly 3300. Unfortunately I cant really take pics because I play on Xbox, but I'm gonna actually try this next time xD If I get pictures (Maybe using my phone or something), I'll post them!

Good luck to you,  but given the challenge is about a year old I don't think people will care much.  Also it's supposed to be attempted in version 1.0.5 so maybe you should start a new challenge instead of revive this old.  If you decide to do so try to develop the rules more than OP and make the challenge more interesting since this one don't seems to gather much attention.

I had a crack at the challenge this morning and I have an entry with a max speed in atmosphere of 5831m/s

Like HoloYolo said, a quick and fun challenge :)

Pics of the flight are here

There a lot more speed to be had too (and ablator... only used about 20% of it) as my trajectory was not optimal and I didn't start to burn early enough, so still had about 30% of the fuel in my final stage remaining.

I'll probably have another crack at this sometime over the weekend and see how fast I can get.

Why 1.0.5?

My attempt was in 1.1.3 (don't have 1.0.5 anymore). I assumed that 1.0.5 was the latest version when the challenge was set.

I just completed a 2nd attempt at the challenge in an attempt to push this particular envelope. Unfortunately it was a spectacularly fiery and instantaneous failure.

This was the state of things a fraction of a second after entering the atmosphere at 12,300m/s, unfortunately another split second later both the detached rocket section and the main vehicle exploded.

I recorded a video of the latter part of the burn into Kerbin, that I'd hoped would document a triumphant return... at least Jeb wasn't on the business end of it.

I have a save of the vehicle before I made my acceleration burn so I'll make some more attempts, applying less delta-v to see what the limit is.

I've managed to get a successful re-entry and landing at 6734m/s

Higher speeds could probably be achieved by stacking heat shields in order for them to fail in sequence, as I was able to enter at 8000m/s and survive down to 35km before my one shield failed.

Here's the video.
