Massive ships vs small, really simple ones

I hope the balancing act won\'t ruin small efficient ships, for some of us that\'s all we can fly and still have a decent frame rate, and this is with a half decent PC, there are a lot of overpowered parts out there, but the current stock rocket parts work nicely in my opinion.

Big ship builders can still make behemoths if they want, I remember reading here long ago that KSP was made with small ships in mind from day one, massive launchtower eclipsing superships are okay if you like that kind of thing, but they aren\'t for me.

My preference is for parallel stages, so all engines are firing, I don\'t like dead engines, I know I\'ll be in trouble when proper drag is introduced (some day)

Same, like for a three engine lander, the middle one would use the two fuel tanks from the other two engines, and then when those are depleted they are let off and I have a full amount of fuel left over.

I hope not either. I\'m a huge fan of your Ker-Flow-Full designs, and the StarSpark is my principal orbital launcher.

NovaSilisko is handing the new stock parts and the balancing.

Wait a sec… From what I heard in his post for the Silisko Edition, he despises the tiny SSTOs that are so easy to make in this version. R.I.P. Micro-orbiters

Simpler the better. Start with the simplest poissible orbiter (Currently I believe it is pod, 1/2 tank, full tank, lander engine, although engine with 1 full tank MIGHT be able to make it.) and tack on more outer stages as the mission demands.

@ Pheonix, bugger I hadn\'t read that, but I know from his packs and Novapunch that he prefers big fat multi stage rockets, now I\'m sad, thanks for the positive words on my old ships, but I think they will all soon be destined for the spacecraft graveyard.

Yeah, they won\'t be 'stock' any more though, but I\'m in a quandary, do I try to use Nova\'s idea of a balanced rocket and fly the new stock, or do I hack the files and fly old stock?

I never liked all those 'realistic' rocket packs, too many parts, giant fuel tanks and weedy oversize engines, values in the hundreds just to get them working.

I tried Silisko edition, my pc had a fit trying to handle the physics of those 500 strength parachutes.

That\'s exactly it Tim_Barrett, the so-called asparagus design (awful name, I call it daisy chaining) that even SpaceX is testing out in their new launcher (or was it Ariane?)

That\'s just crossfeed. Asparagus stalk is running three pairs of boosters crossfeeding to each other and dropping each pair as it runs dry. It\'s an apt name.

sorry buys but, in my opinion, which doesn\'t seem that positive right now, is the balancing should be done. whats the point of building a ship that\'s going to get you where you need to go if you cant say 'wow, all that time and parts, and ive finally done it' at the end.

instead of just 'lol 2 parts and im orbiting the sun'

That\'s exactly what I do most of the time, but how is crossfeeding fuel and dropping pairs similar to asparagus? I thought asparagus was a particularly nasty vegetable.

@zedafan, if it was easy, then it\'d be no fun at all, the whole draw of the small efficient rocket is that they are hard work to fly properly, one mistake and you are dead in the water.

mechjeb

MechJeb is hardly stock, which is what is being talked about, furthermore I have had MechJeb cases where I can get into a quicker and more fuel efficient orbit than MechJeb.

Also, MechJeb (and the RCS thrusters you will probably need with it) are just extra weight.

i got to the mun with this, whats the point of building a massive, 6 stage, complex thing that has a closer weight to power ratio? and when the full game is out, more expensive?

edit: and had about half of one main fuel tank left

Because some of us like to appease the small Jebediah Kerman living inside all of us.

I, for one, enjoy both. As long as it doesn\'t bring my computer to a grinding halt, I enjoy both the massive monument to over-compensation slowly climbing into the sky and the testament to efficiency barely nudging into orbit.

zeldafan99, the only time I use Mechjeb is when I send DonLorenzo a craft for his campaign so he has no trouble flying it, I personally do not like Mechjeb and do not like using it.

I\'m not the only one either, Mechjeb takes away too much control from the player, anyway this isn\'t a Mechjeb thread, it\'s a small verses large ship thread, I have my preference for small ships, and I hope that isn\'t endangered buy Nova\'s tweaks, whatever they will be.
