Mun/Kerbin Phases? (visual)

Recommended Posts

It's been a long while since somebody mentioned that up (2013 I guess). I think it's about time visual phases get added. I mean it's not that necessary but I'm dying to see that.

By phases I mean something like Earthrise: http://www.space-images.com/wallpapers/apollo/11-earthrise/apollo11_earthrise_1920x1200.jpg And Mun phases from the ground. It would be really cool and it could apply to many other celestials (like Ike, or Jool from the surface of Laythe, etc.) and seeing something like the picture above after landing on the Mun would be sick!

What do you guys think? I know there are more priorities right now but at least please take this into consideration in the future. Mods probably can't get that done because of what I understood it depends on the game's engine graphics (Unity 4)..

Thanks in advance.

The Earthrise picture is actually not from the ground. Since Earth and moon are tidally locked, the Earth is on pretty much a fixed spot in the lunar 'sky'. Only when earth is very near the horizon it may 'rise' and 'fall'... but this will take several days. Because it's locked to the orbital period of the Moon.

The Earthrise is caused by the spaceship orbiting the Moon. I also believe this isn't the original Earthrise picture. I think it's either a crop or a manipulation.

It is the original Apollo 11 picture, at least what the site said. There are lots of Earthrise pictures anyways. And aren't phases caused by the actual location of the Sun and what it's lighting? I mean if the Moon was in this position (excuse my paint skills lol) http://oi64.tinypic.com/2u7skzr.jpg

Wouldn't the right side of Earth appear dark from the Moon's surface??

Edit: k I'm dumb. You were talking about Earth actually rising lol, my bad.

Thanks all. Mr Shifty no I actually meant like that Earthrise picture I posted, not the Earthrise thing itself :)

Yeah thanks guys I did see them as well but why are they never visible from the ground? Stand on the Mun or Kerbin and keep looking up, the phases will never occur :/

But they do. Land on Mun and look at Kerbin. It has a dark side and a light side. Time warp a bit and that changes. Same on Kerbin, looking at Mun. There are pictures in this thread showing it.

Unless you mean something different when you say "phases"?

By phases I meant when the Moon appears a crescent, waxing, etc, so does the Earth from the Moon. Yeah apparently the phases do occur from Mun's surface but do they appear on the Mun from Kerbin?

One other thing I wanted to talk about is how eclipses don't work. I mean I was orbiting Laythe when Jool entirely blocked the Sun's light but Laythe was still lightened.

It's not as obvious but I think it's still there. Truthfully I rarely notice Mun when on Kerbin's surface.

I know for a fact you can see Jool's phases from Laythe's surface. And they're beautiful.

We all want eclipses to cast shadows. Rbray is working on in in the new EVE. So fingers crossed there :)

Yea, there were lots of pictures of an "earthrise", but "the earthrise" photo was the first such photo, and as such was taken during Apollo 8.

As far as the phases... yes... they are already in there, although as you can tell from this thread, many graphical enhancement mods make them look prettier.

Thanks everyone, and thanks for the info about earthrise :D

Well since they are here then I just want a way to make them darker. If you look at the picture again, when a side doesn't get sunlight it's almost completely black (looks cooler imo). And I know about the graphical mods but I have an Intel HD card so gg.. can barely run the game itself.

The other thing is the abnormally bright "milky way" background... if you look at duna above... the part at the farthest right is completely black, but it is silhouetted against a really bright "milky way".

In reality, the brightness of the day side of the planet would be so great that you wouldn't notice the milky way at all.

Our eyes can adjust ot many different levels of brightness outside... but it doesn't work so well for a dim computer screen... particularly when you may be looking at that screen in a lit room, hoping to see something.

So... dim features are brighter than they should be realtive to normal daylight (and bright things.... like the sun, aren't bright enough).

If the background was black, rather than like the milky way, and the daysie of the celestial bodies was dispayed even brighter, it would look much more like what you want.

Here, I took the same image that I previousy posted, but adjusted the intensity

The phases are clearly there, we just need brighter planetary surfaces an a dimmer "milky way" to get the proper effect
