Why won't my craft float?

Recommended Posts

Sorry it's dark . . . I've tried several different combinations. There are a total of 24 structural fuselages tacked to the side of my little ATV but it still sinks like a stone. Am I missing something fundamental here?

Happy new year!

Are they all full of fuel?  You may have a slight buoyancy issue if that's the case?  Try emptying most of them out and trying again....

No, definitely not, they're just structural fuselage. I'll try with empty fuel tanks and see if that makes a difference. Happy New Year to you as well!

Structural fuselages won't help you with buoyancy.  They're hollow, and the game knows this.

So it doesn't treat the fuselage like a big buoyant empty space of several cubic meters; it treats it like a solid chunk of metal.

I expect you'll have better luck with empty fuel tanks.

It would be useful I imagine for people who build subs to have a part they can fill and drain at will (with water, not fuel obviously) so they can sink or float when they like.

Yes, and there are mods for that.  I expect we'll need to wait a while, though, for anything like that to be in stock-- Squad's a small company, they have plenty of other fish to fry.

And as far as I'm concerned, it's a good thing.  I agree that submarines would be cool.  But I'd rather that Squad take care of other things (involving the actual flying of rocketships) before spending a lot of time on submarines.  That's not what the "S" in KSP stands for.  :)

"There`s a mod for that" stopped being a reason to not want something in the stock game once we left beta...

I`d like to see where KSP goes once the 32 bit memory limit has gone. Then the caution about extra parts and having to prioritise certain things won`t be so urgent.

There's nothing wrong with wanting things.  :) It's great to want things, and great to tell Squad that you want them.

But the practical likelihood of  getting them (or, more to the point, when you get them) is another matter entirely.  I would be astonished if we get any submarine parts any time soon in the stock game. And there's nothing special about 1.0 (or any other milestone) versus beta; there will always be features that somebody wants, which aren't in the stock game.  It's simply not possible for it to have everything.

Bear in mind that having submarines in stock may be good for you... but it would be bad for someone else.  Specifically, for someone who isn't interested in submarines, but is interested in some other important feature that didn't get implemented because Squad was working on submarines.  So whether it's right for Squad to be spending the time there basically boils down to what the user base mostly wants-- are there more folks who want submarines, or more folks who want something else?

So "there's a mod for that" isn't an excuse, it's a practical workaround.  Yes, it would be nicer for you if it were in stock.  But until that happens, would you rather do without entirely, or would you rather get some great, professional-quality mods-- in fact, RoverDude himself just released a submarine mod-- that will do exactly what you want?

True, but I don't think that the limitation on part count is really about the 32-bit memory limit.  Yes, it's a factor.  But it's not the reason we don't have submarine parts right now.  The main reason is that Squad is a tiny indie company with only a few developers and they have their hands incredibly full.  There are just so many things that urgently need doing that they have to triage relentlessly to decide what to do first.  Heck, per this week's dev notes, they just worked through the Christmas break to keep the momentum going for 1.1.  So I'm inclined to cut 'em some slack.

But yeah, it'll be nice to have more RAM to play with.  :)
