Safe Docking Speed

Recommended Posts

I am attempting to dock two ship in space, each with a Clamp-O-Tron Docking Port Sr. I have tried docking twice now and each time the docking ports connect at around 0.1 - 0.2 m/s. Next, both ships explode...

I feel like I am well within safe docking speed. Am I missing something obvious?

Edit: Reply with screenshot is in a follow up post I made below.

Something is wrong. I'll momentarily assume the job of the real fix-it people here and say: "screenshot would be good" and "before quitting, go into the logs and upload / post them".

I generally dock at about 0.4 - 0.5 m/s. Or rarely at around 1 m/s or more if the docking craft is very light.

Docking under 1m/s is usually safe, so there should be no problem at all at 0.1-0.2m/s.

If you have some clipped parts in your ship, they might cause the explosion upon docking.

As said above, a screenshot would be useful here.

@Plusck I appreciate your trying to help! Here is a screenshot. The vessel on the left is the one under active control, the one on the right is the target. Obviously, I line up the docking ports properly before moving in at 0.1 - 0.2 m/s. Screenshot is just attempting to show both docking surfaces.

As is evident from the screenshot, I am running mods. Mod list is here if it might be relevant.

With regard to logs, I'm not entirely sure which logs to post. Everything from the KSP/logs directory?

Edit: I will say (but I'm not sure) it "feels" like when the ports begin to connect the force suddenly picks up and the active ship almost..drives straight through the station. After the initial explosion both vessels take turn exploding and/or tumbling wildly and exploding.

@Gaarst I am pretty certain I have no clipped parts. I'll double check though.

To be honest, I'm not sure the logs will help much. The stickied thread at the top of this subforum tells you where they are.

The Docking Port Sr. is supposed to be significantly more powerful than the standard one, but most people seem to complain about it being not powerful enough. I've hardly used it so I'm not in a good position to comment, but I don't think it should ever accelerate your ship - even a light one - to more than 9 m/s (which appears to be what is happening here).

So either it's your mods (and this should really be in the modded installs subforum), or someone else will be needed to help you out. Sorry !

Huh. I see no reason that there should be an explosion other than the fact that the two vessels in question are fairly lightweight and would be accelerated rather forcefully by the Clamp-o-Tron Sr. ports. But, there shouldn't be an explosive hit from that.

After things go kablooie, hit F3.  That will give you a nice list of exactly what exploded, in what order, and why.

What does it say?

So, in attempting to do this I docked the vessels again. This time...they docked fine...no explosions. They docked just as expected. Docking speed was 0.1 m/s. I am thoroughly baffled as I am quite confident I did nothing different.

Odd.

lol, guess you attracted the attention of a passing kraken.

In the future:  whenever something odd and/or unfortunate happens, F3 is your friend-- it'll tell you what happened, and that's likely to be the first thing folks ask for when you ask about it on the forums.  :)

Anyway, glad it cleared up for you!
