Hi all, I have bad news to break to you. Summer vacation has come and I forgot my computer in my house. I didn't need it for anything important but I was going to use it to play KSP and move on with the story.

It seems like there will be a three week intermission until I can get the next chapter up. Thanks for waiting on me!

I am happy to report that I am typing this from my computer. I got home later than expected, so a chapter may not come out tonight, but who knows. We might get lucky.

Prepare for 32!

Chapter 32-Nothing lasts forever.

"Are you seeing this?!" Jeb yelled across the cafeteria. He held up the most recent edition of K2news and shook it in the air, so that Bob could see it.

Bob sighed. Jeb always brought the attention to him. "Jeb!" He called out, "Come over hear! Stop yelling!"

Jeb rolled his eyes and walked past bunches of Kerbals, mostly pilots, who were joining the space program. He sat down next to Bob, smiled at Val and nodded at Marmy, who seemed to be more interested in her meal and some calculations on a napkin then him.

"These reports..." Jeb started. "I can't believe it. Kolonia really is plummeting financially. I hear the riots in Resten are insane! Especially in underground environments."

Val shook her head. "Apparently people are dying. It's not a good time for our country." She shook her head again. "They say... They say they're going to shut down the space program."

 

It was now in the program's highest priority to get Stations and Bases out into the Kerbol System. There could be no more time wasted on probes. It was likely Kolonia would collapse, ending the space program. There needed to be a way to continue it.

So the unoriginal named "Station 1" was constructed and blasted off to orbit on a Valentina lifter.

It pulled into a 90x90 Kerbin orbit and awaited instructions. Its systems were turned on and it was equipped with target debris sensors, to ensure what happened to the Rene Target Station didn't happen again.

Eventually, once in orbit, it was decided to transfer the fuel from the tug into the fourth stage and ditch the tug.

 

Back on Kerbin, Katax-Kolonia relations were degrading. The afternoon after the launch, at Black Krags, Kerbals in Air Traffic control spotted an unidentified aircraft above the base.

It then dived down, and at 200 m/s, sped over the hangers and the airfield.

Nedmy was on the toilet when the plane flew over, and as soon as he could, he ran to his aircraft and started it up.

He hunted the aircraft down, and with hand signals, forced it over the ocean, back towards the Katax Union.

At Coaler Crater, Megra awoke to her commander poking her.

"Megra." She said, "There's a fighter we need you to intercept. It's most urgent."

Megra acknowledged this and eventually got to her fighter. In her sleeping clothes, she headed up towards the mystery fighter heading over the ocean.

She had been given no information on the mission, only coordinates. That was the only thing. She expected it to be an escort mission out of Kolonia airspace.

But it wasn't.

Eventually, after a few minutes at Mach. 2, she slowed down and spotted an exhaust trail.

She almost flipped the craft when a message headed over the radio.

"Megra!" Someone had said. It sounded like Nedmy's voice.

She flew up next to the aircraft.

"Megra!" Yes, this was definitely Nedmy. She continued her silence. "Megra, I know you won't understand."

Megra looked at the aircraft she was flying next to. Immediately she knew, it was Nedmy's.

"I know this is something I shouldn't be doing. But we're on the wrong side." She listened closely to his words. "There, over the ocean, they are the good people. Our government, our nation, they're corrupt. They're violent. They want Nuclear War!"

Another voice came over the radio.

It was her commander. "Megra, shoot the target down."

Nedmy took a breath. "Don't do it. We can't let these evil people control us!"

"Megra, move into position."

"Megra! You can get away form them! Your aircraft has the fuel!"

"He's a defector. Shoot him down."

"Don't. Please."

Megra knew she had no choice. If the defection worked, Kolonia would have an excuse to nuke the Katax Union, and that would be to destroy the data they collected.

She cleared her throat.

"Nedmy, I'm sorry."

"It's ok." He replied. "You wouldn't understand."

Megra pulled the trigger. White hot lead shot out of the guns on her wings.

It took 6 seconds. Nedmy's left wing came flying off. His aircraft tumbled to the water below.

"Congratulations, Megra. Report home."

With tears in her eyes, Megra set her aircraft towards the KSC. Nedmy was right.

She knew it.

But there was nothing she could do.

 

The space program, now running lower and lower on funds, invested in a surprisingly costly idea, which, after a lot of effort, turned into the Resurgence Ultraheavy Lifter. It would be able to, if the program survived, carry multiton paylods into LKO, the Mun, Minmus, and even Duna.

The launch was quite a sight. It was the largest rocket ever created.

The Payload, however, was the amazing thing. It would be the first base ever, stationed on Minmus.

The jump from light landers to this base came when Gene decided against the Interplanetary Exploration "ScatterProbes" and instead wanted to stay in the Kerbin system, for the short term. The current state of Kolonia also played a huge role. People wanted a "Safehouse".

The base was named "Minmus Home".

Within hours of launch, it was on its way out, safe from the troubles of the planet below.

It would enter Minmus Orbit silently, 7 days later.

 

After days more of construction, the second Resurgence was rolled onto the pad. But this time, it carried the heaviest payload to date. It carried the "Command Station", which would be launching with Jeb, Val, Bill and Bob on a Kliper Spacecraft. It would be the center of the spaceprogram, even if Kolonia fell.

Many watched if they could.

It was quite a sight to see.

After 10 or so minutes, with the spacecraft safely in orbit, it was decided by Val, the acting commander, to assemble the Station's solar arrays.

It was a simple job, and was finished in half an orbit.

The Kliper, Piloted by Jeb, then undocked and "threw" the Metal holding plate away.

It was then, the moment Jeb redocked, when Valentina cut communications.

"Alright crew." She said, "We're going to steal a station."

Taking control of Station 1, Val brought on an efficient transfer burn. In another half orbit, it was there.

The docking was the complex part. Station 1 has barley any reaction wheels, and no RCS.

The Command Station had reaction wheels embedded, and its RCS was out of line with the Center of Mass.

So Val made Station 1 stand still relative to them, and made Jeb undock the Kliper.

She then, taking three orbits to complete the process, slowly controlled the station at about 0.1 m/s towards Station 1.

Thanks to the incredible crew, she docked successfully.

Val turned on the radio again. There was lots of yelling on the other side.

All she said was, "Sorry!"

That day, the Kolonian Fund dropped in value by 1/4th.

It seemed like the space program didn't have much time.

Well, the government of Kolonia funds the space program. The government collapses, and all potential funds are lost, as well as all the safety.
