Where to buy KSP

Recommended Posts

Hi all

Forgive for posting this question here but I couldn't really find anywhere else for it to go.

I have scrapped together almost enough money to afford to buy KSP.

There are two options available Steam or the KSP website.

The KSP website appears to be more expensive (last time I checked) but Steam comes with its own baggage.

Can the Steam version function without a persistent Internet connection?

Which version will quicker/easier to download? I will have to do my download from an internet cafe or coffee shop where there is free, unlimited WI-FI access.

My internet connection at home is hopeless too slow. I had to download the demo at a coffee shop.

Can I backup my download and will it work when I restore it in the event of a harddrive failure?

Any thing I've missed?

thanks for any help and advice.

BTW I am Orc and I'e been playing the Demo version (downloaded while at a coffee shop) since early December. KSP is the most awesome amount of fun I've ever had with a computer game.

Kind regards, and keep safe,

Orc

The Steam version doesn't need you to be online either. As I heard, it downloads kinda' the same KSP directory, and it becomes portable after that. So you can just copypaste the directory if you want multiple installs with different mods etc.

Hi Orc.

Not sure about current pricing, but yes, Steam does come with its own baggage.  Like having to install Steam.

As Evanitis said, you don't need a persistent connection for the Steam version.

I think either download would be pretty fast if you are somewhere with a decent connection.

If you download from the store you can back up your download and use it to install the game fresh in case of a hard drive crash.  If it's a Steam install, I think you have to copy the folder structure somewhere else after it installs to have a backup, but don't quote me on that.

I like the control I have by downloading the zip and putting the files where I want.  It's nice to have multiple installs.  I usually have one stock install and a separate install for my modded game.

Happy landings!

You can do the same with the Steam version.

This is correct. You can launch KSP directly from the Steam folder. KSP is fully portable. I launch it from CKAN even if it's a Steam install.aed4.png

I would suggest doing it the other way around: copy the Steam download to another directory, and then run it from there and leave the Steam one as the clean backup. It doesn't need to be in the Steam file structure to run.

Download the Steam copy and launch the game through the main folder. (C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Kerbal Space Program) You won't have to be online for this and it's how I do it. The only downside is that steam won't track your hours, but that's alright. ;)

The only thing steam is good for where KSP is concerned is if you want to keep track of your hours played. Otherwise I suggest buying direct or using a 3rd party site like G2A.com. It's nearly 75% off.
