Gfx issue

Recommended Posts

Each time I go to open KSP, through steam or from the file destination, as an administrator - you name it, I get a black screen on my computer. A few times I mashed the keyboard in frustration and managed to bring up my desktop for a second and then hello black screen again. I have uninstalled, rebooted, tried different launch options through steam. I managed to get window mode working but the black screen issue yet again arises. I looked through the log files for KSP and all was normal until I saw a multitude of reports reading: "skipped rendering frame because gfx device is in invalid state (device lost)". I am convinced that this surely can't be the game itself. I am so irritated that i cannot play my favourite game, HELP!

Laptop 64-bit

Specs:

RAM: 16gb    HDD: 1tb

Graphics: AMD Radeon HD 8650G + HD 8750M Duel Graphics (8650G ~760mb and 8750M 2gb)

CPU: AMD A10-5750M APU with Radeon HD graphics 2.50ghz

Hi BRShooter.

The symptom sounds like what happens when KSP cannot find a driver for the graphics card, as you have several cards KSP may have found the wrong driver or no driver for the card it's trying to use.

In the output_log.txt in the KSP_Data folder you will see which graphics card KSP found and whether it is using an AMD driver or the default Windows driver.

It may just be that you're on a power saving mode and the laptop is using your APU's built in Radeon HD, but your installed driver is for your main graphics card, ensuring the laptop is plugged in and not on powersave should solve that.

This issue can also occur if you alt+tab during load.

If you upload your log to pastebin.com and post the link here we could take a look for you.

Hi thanks for the reply,

I opened my output_log file and the graphics card being used was "AMD Radeon HD 8750M", as I have duel graphics set to on for KSP. An interesting point in the file was that it states it has tried all resolutions when starting KSP but all had failed.

My laptop is plugged in and I am not on power saving mode, I have changed the graphics settings as well through the AMD catalyst control centre but the issue is still there.

Here is the link for my log: http://pastebin.com/dKCDDHT3

Thanks for your assistance.

Can you tell me what resolution your desktop is set to?  It will need to be at least 1280x720 for KSP to start.

Also if you're using -force-opengl or -force-d3d11 please try without these.

Another thing to try is Windows 8 compatibility mode if you're using Windows 10.

If that doesn't help, please run dxdiag from the start menu run box, generate a report and upload that for us, thanks.

The driver may be out of date, your dxdiag says this:

Quote

Driver Version: 15.200.1065.0

Driver Date/Size: 10/8/2015 19:57:11, 1468840 bytes

But the current driver looks to be this one, Display Driver version 15.30.1025.1001, released on 12/17/2015 with a hotfix on 1/7/2016.

Even if nothing else changed, Windows updates can change how the drivers talk to the OS, so the drivers need to be updated to work correctly.

Just in case that is not the correct driver you can make AMD autodetect the driver for you at this link.

You'll have to reboot after installing to ensure the changes take effect.

Could you upload another output log? In your last log, it seems as though KSP launched using OpenGL, regardless of you not having specified to launch with OpenGL. Switching to OpenGL is usually a fall-back from DX9 not launching correctly. I also noticed that the game is launching using your integrated graphics, not your dedicated graphics. Try disabling your integrated graphics using Windows Device Manager. Before I continue, I take no responsability for any damages to your computer that are caused by my advice or instructions. By following the instructions below, you agree that the responsibility of your device is yours and yours only, and no responsibility is to be placed on me. If these steps are performed incorrectly, or something in your system is configured wrong, your system can become unusable. That said, you should be able to tell if something is up. To open Device Manager, do the following:

- Search for 'Device Manager' in Windows Search, and open it. If prompted for an admin password, or a 'Yes/No' admin prompt, click yes.

- Once device manager is open, you should be greeted with several 'tabs' inside a window with headings such as 'Computer', 'Disk drives', 'Display adapters', etc

Once device manager is open, the 'Display Adapters' tab may already be expanded. If this is the case, then one of your display adapters is in an error state, due to a software/hardware issue (usually software). If this is the case, a full Windows reset will likely be in order to fix the issue. You can tell if your display adapter is in an error state as it will have a yellow triangle beside the icon of the device. If the tab is not expanded, and the display adapter devices have no errors (yellow triangles), you can continue with the following.

- Open the display adapters tab and find your integrated graphics. It should be listed under something containing 'HD 8750M' or similar. Right-click on this entry, and select the 'disable' option. When prompted if you do want to disable the device, click 'Yes'.

At this point, the system should switch to the dedicated graphics. If it does not, then your dedicated graphics has a severe issue. If it does, try launching KSP.

If you're frightened by all of this, then the TL;DR non-scary version is reset windows.

Thanks for all your help. In the end I solved it...and I am very embarrassed. I had to disable the application profile on the AMD CCC. That fixed everything.

Thanks. :D

P.S

Disabling HD 8570M literally gave me 1 fps when I opened KSP, should it be the other driver that is disabled?
