Russian Inspired Space Parts

Recommended Posts

So we have mk 1 command pot which is based on mercurys command module and the other command module with crew capacity of 3 which i think is based on Apollos command module but Anyways
Im suggesting to add sphere capsules just like russians of course in kerbal way.
The boosters used on Soyz spacecraft
so we have a little bit more than american space craft

Assuming 1.1+ adds the ability to have more parts around without issues, this would make a lot of sense. They should do more than just add new, Russian-inspired parts, though.

For career/science play, add a whole suite of such parts, but really think them through as they represent different paradigms, and then redesign the tech tree so that you pick a path, then move along it. Have the appropriate pros and cons of each system, as well. For example, the CCCP pods might have built-in retrorockets for land-based parachute landings. The US-style parts might land too fast for that---tweak the US capsules to land at 8.5-10 m/s and have that survivable on water. So if you go with the current KSP parts based on US stuff, you land on water or die unless you build some other kind of craft. If something like the current version if USILS (RoverDude's life support mod) were added, then the added habitation volume of the Soviet-style craft might allow longer duration flights, etc.

Make tech tree choices matter with meaningful branches, instead of just unlocking everything.

We just need more different pods. Now we have one 1-seat pod, one 3-seat pod, and that's basically it. Other habitable space parts are, strictly speaking, for building stations, not for launching people into orbit.

Speaking of real life pods, spherical ones are from the early stage of the Soviet space program, Vostok/Voskhod. They suffered from horrible g-force on reentry, like 10g or so. That's why more technically advanced Soyuz landing capsules look mostly like Kerbal pods, their shape gives them some lifting force to make reentry trajectory less steep and g-force less cruel.

True, and to be really fair to the differences, you'd have to not allow vostok (at least with whatever chute you have available at the start of career) to be survivable on land... but we'd need kerbal parachute for that :)

It wont matter about the performance of real life russian pods. its just better to have them in ksp. and some really nice soyz inspired boosters i love them. and i would like some smaller engines to use cluster of them to lift up the rocket. of course i can do that but i dont like to use big engines
Americans used 5 Engines for SaturnV
Russians used around 30 engines for N-1

I'm personally don't care much about nationality of that or those part. What I'm really appreciate about KSP is that while NASA, Roscosmos, EASA, JAXA, and so on are very cash-strapped now and can't afford the pace of space exploration of the 60-s, at least we have that game to play with! I'm really much more inspired with ability to replicate possible near-future space missions with near future hardware no matter whose national space program designs it fits most.

But for now I need to place a man kerbal on the Moon Mun, or develop and launch a probe to nearby planet - passed stage for Earth space programs, but I need some experience to go further.

I think that if they were going to add russian-inspired parts (or any others) that overlap with current parts in terms of capability (1-kerbal pod, 3 kerbal pod, etc), then they should be different enough in specifics to make use of them a pro/con choice. Better at one aspect, worse at another (if that's reasonable for the given part).

I don't think it would be right to add parts just because they look Russian-ish (or Chinese-ish, or whatever-ish). Like @tater, I'd prefer to see new parts with some new/changed functionality, not just retextures/remodels/mild respecs of the old ones. Two-men capsule, five-men capsule, something like Soyuz (one part while in the VAB, three separate-able parts while in flight).

Holy mother of Jeb, it would be like a miracle to have an early available 2-seat capsule for those rescue contracts...

What i would like is a full-span small fin in the kind of the soyouz style (or with even more angle).

In the size of the basic fin:

and please remove these screws thartare longer than a wing is thick.

Something to have engine clusters is a good idea too (some mod have or with  cubic-struts it works but it has consequence on the aero calculation).

HGR and Tantares both have nice Soviet parts. They tend to use a 1.875m diameter, which adds a nice difference from stock.  Still, the stock parts are NOT copies of US stuff (except the shuttle cockpit), they just have the same look. So a "stock-a-like" version of CCCP stuff could be arbitrarily changed as long as they had the right feel.

"Home Grown Rocketry" has some really nice parts including an amazing Soyuz capsule which are 1.875m.

I've been watching Mike Aben's series on Youtube and both is "Korion" and the ships he launches are really nice.

I might get these parts in 1.1 to experiment with them.  But after the future art pass on existing parts, I would not mind some nice additions in the stock game as well.
