KSK
Favourite tweet from the whole event:Next rocket landing on drone ship in 2 to 3 weeks w way more hydraulic fluid. At least it shd explode for a diff reason.Forget grid fins - Musk has got his Jebediah flag jammed all the way over.Edit. Hey c'mon mods. I agree that we don't want the forum littered with bad language, but I think that editing out 'naughty bottom' was a little over-sensitive. Albert VDS
^The news is not fresh enough to get a place in the media, at least not on TV.
SuperFastJellyfish
Oh how beautiful. Now we have to make sure that the media doesn't spin this the wrong way...What fallout are you expecting if it is reported as the media usually reports things? I live in a suburb of Chicago, IL, and not one person here at work that I talked to had ever even heard of SpaceX(we have about 30 employees here). I work a blue collar job, and would consider my coworkers as what I picture when I think of the uninformed, general public. Most people here thought that Obama shut NASA down completely when the Shuttle was decommissioned. I had to prove to my boss that this was not the case because she 'read an article on Yahoo! about it' and wouldn't believe a word that I was saying about all of our orbiters, landers, and rovers. Warduk
More violent than I thought, but the precission to land was perfect.
Robotengineer
That was awesome! At least it blew up on landing rather than launch. (Looking at you Antares.)

*Aqua*
How does the guidance system determine altitude over ground (barge in this case)? Does the rocket have a radar altimeter or something like that? This can't be just GPS positioning, I don't think that'd offer enough precision.I guess it's a custom-made DGPS which allows very precise positioning measurements (in the range of a few centimeters of better). Duxwing
I guess it's a custom-made DGPS which allows very precise positioning measurements (in the range of a few centimeters of better).Too complicated and expensive: it probably just has a passive RFID (like your car's remote start sensor) and waits for a very-short-range transmitter on the barge to set it off.-Duxwing
Camacha
Too complicated and expensiveAre suggesting this technology is too complicated and expensive to be employed for rocket science to do something that has never been done before? If there was ever any appropriate application, this would be it.
StrandedonEarth
That was awesome, and I agree the sound of it was pretty cool too. Regarding how it appeared to accelerate across the deck, I would hazard a guess that the engine section tore off and the tankage was accelerated by residual pressure and/or combustion of the remaining RP-1 as air got into the ruptured tank.I'd love to hear Elon say that they Kerbaled the landing
Camacha
Are you watching another clip than I am or is the sound really not that interesting? Clunk cluck-clunk.

DGPS receivers are mass-produced today, you can pay one for less than 50 bucks. They use that thing for planes, ship navigation near coasts and precision farming. The barge was in the middle of the sea so there must be already a GPS receiver aboard. There's nothing else out there which you can use for navigation.I never saw or heard of a RFID system which works with distances over a one or two meters. NovaSilisko
I started making an audio simulation of the landing when the video was released. Turns out I was pretty close already, and did some minor tweaks to fit my audio to the video:
Meithan
I guess it's a custom-made DGPS which allows very precise positioning measurements (in the range of a few centimeters of better).Uhm, yes, I see that DGPS, or WAAS since they're in North America, do offer sub-meter precision, which should be enough. All seems to indicate that the first stage just flies autonomously to a pre-programmed location using its internal IMU+GPS. Hence why just hitting the barge is already a big success. Bryce Ring
How did the Patent Appeal Go ? (Would a Permanent Oil Rig style Platform attached to the Ocean floor count as a sea going vessel ? So many questions, such interesting times )Well Done SpaceX team. Hope you get the hydraulic fluid issue solved for the next attempt.PS Anyone know how much Payload increase or DeltaV savings (for the "Return to pad landing") would be gained by launching from the mountains in Ecuador, Maybe Nevado Cayambe or Antisana?Bryce Ring.[h=3][/h][h=3][/h]Mt Anastasia or ?? artwhaley
I'm really surprised they didn't see the low hydraulic fluid and terminate the landing attempt... either pushing the BOOM button or at last switching guidance to miss the boat. Camacha
I'm really surprised they didn't see the low hydraulic fluid and terminate the landing attempt... either pushing the BOOM button or at last switching guidance to miss the boat. Why would you use the boom button on a craft that is landing without anyone around for miles? Let us see what happens and let the chips fall where they may. Terminating and dropping into the sea might have been an option, though I can imagine that there was no time for that and that any damage caused to the barge is worth less than the data and lessons learned. It looks like it actually managed to nearly zero out its vertical velocity, but in doing so it gained a lot of horizontal velocity
Bryce Ring
I would have put the actual Gimbal failure down to within the last 10 seconds, There may not have been time to correctly asses locational data... maybe ? Can any one see and confirm weather the loss of hydraulics was to cause the gimbal to stay central, or weather the thrust line was stuck off COG and caused more torque, during those final few seconds ?EDIT/Seems I was wrong about the Gimbals on the Rocket motors.Elon Muskâœâ€@elonmusk Follow @ID_AA_Carmack Before impact, fins lose power and go hardover. Engines fights to restore, but … Bryce Ring Man I am so Stupid lol (Now I have been told)/EDIT Edited January 17, 2015 by Bryce Ring Been Edumecated
