College/University Discussion

On the KSP thread about ones professional background, I noticed quite a few people who are in the phase where one would apply to colleges, and many who already graduated who could be of help to those applying to their alma mater.  So I'm now curious as to where everyone went to college or is planning to go, so we could get a idea of what it's like on campus.

Personally, my college list is:

Purdue (Reach)

Miami-Oxford (Reach)

Texas A&M (Reach)

Michigan State University (Reach)

University of Missouri (Match)

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical (Match)

University of Colorado-Boulder (Match)

University of Kansas (Match)

University of Nebraska-Lincoln (Match)

Iowa State (Match)

University of Idaho (Safety)

University of Mississippi (Safety)

Arizona State (Safety)

University of Arizona (Safety)

Test scores are extremely good, but my GPA screwed me over quite well.

On another note, has anyone gone through the NROTC program?

Not NROTC but I did do AFROTC at Georgia Tech. I might be able to answer some generic questions.

In general, how early in the morning was the physical training?  Also, how many people in your unit made it to commissioning?

PT times varied greatly because of class schedules and remote members (members who were studying at a nearby school and doing their ROTC stuff at GaTech). There were generally 2 sessions a day to accommodate schedules. That will be something that differs greatly between detachments (AF word...not sure if that's what they're called in the Navy).

Out of the original class of about 25 that started with me, only 5 made it to commissioning. Some were removed unwillingly for various reasons (collapsed lung dq'd one, a couple others didn't keep their grades high enough) but most dropped out of their own will. Some actually switched branches and went Marine or Navy about halfway through. Some changed schools so I don't know if they completed the program or not.

I would say "pick two." I don't think you can have them all

Social life, schmocial life.

On topic, probably Caltech. It's close to JPL and SpaceX! I can work at whatever one I want.

And then this.

You'll only get to do two really well and you should make social life your third priority.

I am planning to go to MIT or Stanford, have no idea if I will get in. I haven't even made up my mind on what exactly I want to do (aside from going to Mars).

These are both very, very, impressive schools, and I'd say that if you got in, you'd have a excellent shot at becoming an astronaut (As long as you keep your physical side up as well, of course).  Good luck!

How hard is it to balance ROTC, social life, and a "difficult" major like Engineering while still maintaining free time?

Social life? Free time? What are these strange concepts?
