you have seen it on the news that they have discovered it!

celabrate

They found something similar to the Higgs-Boson. Whatever it may be, is a remarkable achievement by CERN, and should be celebrated, on the day of Independence for the American nation, known as the United States of America.

Last I read it was conclusive quite yet, but very promising data

today morning... atlas announced 5 sigma (and cms announced 4.9 sigma) for a new boson in the range the higgs is supposed to be (as well, they announced further investigation is necessary to evaluate if it has all properties of higgs or if it is a completely new particle)...

and - both experiments did show basically the same results (which is good, of course, as it does not contradict the discovery)

To be fair they can never be 100% certain... There is always some doubt. For example we can\'t be 100% certain on our current model of the atom. We are very sure though. :D

All good news to be sure, but how will this affect us, the average Joe (Joe actually being my name... :()?

It won\'t, it\'ll be the last particle in the standard model.

Technically you can. I consider the next model, the Grand Unified Field of Physics.

Well, the standard model is not the whole universe. ( or doesn\'t count the whole universe)

Edit: for example, Gravity isn\'t part of the standard model.

Of course, we\'re not sure if the boson we\'ve found is actually consistent with the standard model higgs boson. Hopefully it isn\'t, it\'d give us an idea where to go next.

Indeed, science would become rather boring if everything fit exactly as it should within the standard model.

It would be more exciting if it wasn\'t actually the boson that they found, but something else entirely as someone here said. Even the physicists explaining the boson said they would rather find something unexpected that would lead to the next discovery.
