Mission To Duna

Hi, this is probably the most involved mission ive ever done so thought id share it - if this is the wrong board, sorry!

The goals:

1) Find suitable mining location on Duna

2) Land Mining Craft and begin mining

3) Land a Crew to establish small base to watch over mining

4) Return / Rotate Crew back to Kerbin

Im using USI Life Support so need to incorporate Habitation and Supplies

My Plan:

• Have all parts in Orbit ready to go (Satellite, Miner, Habitation/Transfer Module, Lander)
• Dock the Lander with the Habitation Module (SCANSat and Miner will be separate)
• Send SCANSat and M700 Satellite in first Transfer Window
• Establish best location via SCANSat and Land Miner there (with UKS Inflatable Logistics HUB)
• Land Miner and begin Mining
• Await next Window
• Transfer Kerbals to the orbitting Hab Module via Shuttle
• Transfer Hab module and Lander to Duna
• Send Lander and Rover to Mining location
• Harvest Fuel
• Return to Orbit
• Rotate Crew

SCANSat:

• Consists of SCANSat Altimetry and Biome Scanner plus M700 (not sure I need both but really dont want to risk it!)
• Will enter a polar orbit at 85-91 degrees inclination

Miner:

• Will have 2 drills, Converter, Storage for Ore and Storage for Liquid Fuel
• Will be sent with a Inflatable Logistic Hub which will decouple during descent and land separately
• Transfer Stage powered by LF Nuke Engine

Habitation Module:

• Needs Supplies and Habitation for 3 Kerbals for at least 910 Days (Habitat Ring, Agriculture Ring, Lab etc)
• Transfer Stage powered by LF Nuke Engine
• Massive Solar Panels

Lander:

• Will land primarily with parachutes saving fuel for getting back to orbit
• Will have a rover

Return Leg:

• Kerbals will leave the surface of Duna and redock with the Hab Module (hopefully Logistic Hub will have transferred fuel, never tried this though!)
• They will await transfer window (approximately waiting for 371 days)
• Transfer to Kerbin and renter orbit
• Launch Shuttle to retrieve Kerbals

PS: I think this should be in KSP Fan Work

PPS: KSP 1.1 has the option for clamshell fairings..(not sure for the pre-release)

Yup quite a few!  Im on 1.1 Pre Release and I'm using most of the mods available

Built a Karibou Rover to use as my Duna Lander / Rover.  Its now waiting in orbit for the window like the rest of the ships.  Was originally gonna dock my lander with the Hab Module but as ive gone for a big ass Karibou, my delta V calculations for the Hab transfer stage will be way off so sending the Karibou alone.

Ive spent the last few days designing and testing Space Plane SSTO's to use as the Shuttle for getting crew to and from the Hab Module.  Its the first spaceplane ive ever made in over 1000hrs and man its hard.  Anyway, its finished and now my Duna fleet is complete.  Here are some pics of the fleet from KVV:

 

Now just 200 days until the first window which will send wave one which is consisting of: SCANSat Satellite, Mining Ship and the Karibou Rover.

Ok wave one is done!! All 3 ships sent to Duna successfully!! SCAN Sat found the ideal landing place, the Miner went down and landed successfully whilst also detaching the Inflatable Logistic Module which also landed nearby (closer than I expected!!).  I then started mining and switched to the Karibou Rover and attempted to land nearby, but ended up about 5km away.  No worries! It has a auto-core so did a short drive and was at the base!!  See pics below:

 

Next step is getting Kerbals there in the next window and also working out how to inflate the Logistics Hub, maybe it needs a core?  Happy with how its going so far!  Although I realised ive sent the Karibou to the surface so now dont have a lander for the Kerbals! Oops.  Will have to revert to the original idea of having a regular lander dock with the Hab module.

Well the first part of the mission (Getting there) is done and was a success!!  Upon landing on Duna the latest pre-release installed and now most of my game is broken so not sure how theyll ever get back! Anyway, here are the last set of pics.  Mission Successful!
