This is awesome! I'm building a big land rover that will have many storage bays for smaller vehicles, and it will have a crew of Kerbals and be able to go on fairly off road terrain.

In actual geographical discussion, I'm wondering what the is the cause of the rather eratic, jagged and generally uneven terrain seen here.

Any thoughts?

it's probably caused by the same thing that causes Canada to be shaped like that.

AKA glaciers.

Also, I found an area of seabed about 8m below the surface pretty far from shore. The water around it is far deeper, and the area of raised seabed is almost square. Will post pics soon, am AFKSP.

So, I threw together a plane and flew to the volcanic/impact island thingy that is north of KSC. Here are some good screens to help continue the debate.

Approach.(Gratuitous pics of my impromptu plane included for free, and yes the landing gear suck and it's a constant struggle to get off the ground)

The next screens will be from all angles without much reference. I was flying approximately ENE, but that doesn't help much when I started spinning the camera around.

Looking northish.

 

Next 3 after I crossed island and looking back.

This 3rd one has some good terrain detail.

I then turned around and landed near the middle and took some from as close to cardinal directions as I could.

I am leaving Jeb and the plane on the island for now if anyone wants a different or more specific view.

There is a very distinct depression. I took some more shots after driving closer. Fast growing trees!!! I was here like an hour ago and it was barren.

This is definitely extra evidence.  If you look at how krakota blew up, later it developed a new small volcano on top of it.  In the fifth picture a small raised section with a depression is visible.  

This would most definitely qualify as a supervolcano.

Volcano yes, super volcano, not so sure but is possible I guess. Not much of a caldera, more like an old dormant crater.  In my game I named it Mt. Krakums because it does kind of remind me of Krakatoa.

Certain of those shots really remind me of Iwo-Jima. Even the elevation profile of the island is reminiscent if not truly similar.

Iwo-Jima is a volcanic island in a subduction zone on the pacific rim. The ocean around it is relatively shallow and curves deeper the further from the island you go. The the east is a major deep ocean trench.

Not really drawing conclusions here, just offering observations for comparison.

Looking back, opposite direction of flight, pretty steep sides.

the end is near.

I will pick up where I left off soon. Looks like once I go right down the main branch that there are some really interesting looking features. Maybe even an oxbow.

While it certainly doesn't have airfields...

Or scalding hot volcanic sands...

Or entrenched imperial Japanese...

But, well... I'm not really trying to suggest that the island and Iwo-Jima are in fact connected in any way, I'm just pointing out a RL place that might be somewhere to start looking for parallels. I thought that almost all Pacific islands were submarine-mountains/dead volanoes that rise from the oceanic bedrock (like Tahiti, Pitcairn or even Hawaii), so I checked it out when I first thought of Iwo-Jima and it turns out not so - in many cases the sea stays relatively shallow a long ways around unless/until you reach a deep trench. This is true of many subduction zone island chains including Fiji, Tonga, Okinawa etc.

I was continuing my river survey (Still haven't made it to the mouth yet to look at the possible impact site) but I did find something rather interesting at the end of a dry river bed right before I had to turn back and refuel. I'll start with the oxbow I spoke of last post and end with the discovery at the end of the river bed.

Approach to crater like depression.

Might even be many craters lumped together, or possibly a volcanic area?

But the weird thing would be that the main crater would have to be formed before the smaller ones.

TBH if I want to get to a location on Kerbin, I don't use a plane. I typically choose to use either a suborbital hop or de-orbit some ship over it.

It's amazing what you can find in KSP without ever even leaving Kerbin
