Large Rover Wheels

Recommended Posts

I know there are a lot of threads about the various issues with rover wheels, but I came across one that I haven't found any reference to before.  I built a rover with the large rover wheels and enabled differential steering, but they would not steer.  Is this a known issue or did I do something dumb?  I did make sure the wheels were not blocked.  They rolled plenty, but only forward and back - my rover would not turn at all...

Yea... I can't recall ever actually using those wheels on anything aside from breifly playing with them a long time ago on the ksc runway.

Steering things in general that don't swivel got a lot harder (referring to the larger landing gear sizes). I wouldn't be surprised if these wheels were overlooked with the wheel physics changes, and are now screwed up.

Those aren't the large wheels though - I'm talking about the huge honking wheels...  They are supposed to skid steer, but they don't seem to in my install... guess I'll put in a bug report...

Could you post a pic of your rover? Wheel arrangement matters for skid steering. And have you played around with the various wheel settings for friction, etc?

Maybe you really have found a bug -- just considering some possibilities.

Also, moving to Gameplay Questions.

Do you mean something like this?

I've gone over 1300km so far on the Mun with this rover, and had no problems steering.  I didn't right click and change the wheels in any way.

One thing, however, is when it turns, the wheels don't look like they're turning.  By that I mean the other wheels physically turn to the left or right when the rover itself is turning.  These wheels appear more like a tank, and stay pointed straight ahead, even if the rover is turning left or right.

That's pretty much exactly the wheels I mean.  I created a rover with four of these wheels and could not get it to steer at the KSC at all.  I know they don't look like they steer because they are skid steering (steering by applying different drive to each wheels) but in my install they all went straight...

You can get odd steering behavior depending on where the control unit is mounted on the rover. That is, the "control from here" point. Klaws, docking ports and pods all can be control points. If your main one is mounted upside down, that causes issues. If you rotate your command point unit in the SPH, that can cause issues. The basic deal is that you want a control point that is aimed in the direction you want to drive. If you have a control point that is aimed up, then it can make a difference as to which direction the wheels point in the SPH. If they point toward the door, that usually works. If they point the other direction, that can often fail.

As snark said, we'd need a picture of it to try to diagnose. But the mondo wheels do steer properly if you attach everything properly.

Oh, one important thing to help diagnose the problem -- the navball. If you launch your example rover onto the runway and take a screenshot, then we could see the navball.

I'm not having great luck on Kerbin with mine, either, but it does turn....  are you using any mods by chance?

I am, but nothing that "should" impact rover wheels.  Have tried on a stock install with the same results, too...

The mondo wheels use differential steering like tank treads.  That is, when you apply a steering control, the wheels on the inside of the turn spin backwards causing the rover to pivot.  These wheels don't rotate to change their angle like the other wheels.  However, differential steering only works at low speed.  You can pivot in place and turn at low speed, but if you're moving faster than about 5m/s, it doesn't work (although you can horse it around with sufficient reaction wheel torque).

HOWEVER, there's a fun bug with these wheels at high speed.  If you quickly tap alternate steering keys, the rover will accelerate to ridiculous speeds.  I've gotten them over 60m/s that way :)

Sounds like fun, but in my install the differential steering doesn't seem to work at any speed...

Here, let's try eliminating some possibilities -- download ths: http://www.virtualrealitytoursllc.com/pix/mondo_rover.craft

I built that in my 1.1.2 version, and it works. Load it into your SPH, launch it onto your runway, hit W to get a little speed, then try hitting A and D to see what happens, and let us know.
