Green/red left/right light placement in VAB

Recommended Posts

If I want the lights on my vessel to be red and green in the way they're used for real-life aircraft to indicate left and right, which lights should be red and which green for default placement and view in the VAB?

As an ex member of the Royal Navy port (left) is red, starboard (right) is green. The same for aircraft too - a universal way of understanding which way a craft is orientated. Hope ive answered yojr question :)

Nautical directions are based on where the ship is pointing.  If you are standing on the ship and facing the bow (the front), then the PORT side will be on your LEFT, and the STARBOARD side will be on your right.  Now, how to remember them?  Well, PORT and LEFT both have 4 letters.  RED has 3.   As well, STARBOARD and RIGHT both have more than 4 letters, as does GREEN  (you could also remember that RIGHT and GREEN both have 5 letters).  So basically: smaller words on the left, bigger words on the right.  Always remember that this is relative of where the vessel is heading (but I think you know that already).

Hopefully I didn't just confuse you more :P

Place a command pod in the VAB. The ladder is "up". If you are looking out the door of the VAB, "up" is to your right. This means that left/port is toward you, and right/starboard is away (the side closest to the door of the VAB). Of course, you can always just stick a red light on one side and put it on the launchpad and see. :)

In the VAB, when you place parts without changing their default orientation, "up" is toward the wall WITHOUT your big flag on it, "down" is towards the big flag, "left" is towards the back of the VAB, "right" is towards the open door to the launchpad, "forward" is toward the ceiling, and "aft" is towards the floor.  This is the orientation all command pods and probe cores will have by default unless you use the Q and E keys to rotate them.

So, if you don't change pod orientation, you put the red light on the side facing the back wall and the green light on the side facing the launchpad.
