Large landing gear not steerable

Recommended Posts

Considering 1.1.x made the landing gears a lot more vulnerable to weight, and I've read people say "well don't land heavy planes on toothpicks!", then I agree with this. It's no good if the only options for nosegear are too-weak toothpicks or unsteerable heavy gear.

I've been having good luck with monster-class cargo planes using a pair of steerable medium nose gear.  Not the prettiest, maybe, but the big planes rarely are anyway.

Besides, seems like it's the rear gear that cause more problems.  Playing with the spring and damper settings really does make a difference in peak force transmitted to the airframe.  If you're having parts blow off on landing, it's more likely due to that, than non-steerable front gear.  Hard to tell since there's not much detail about the ultimate problem you're having during landing

the problem I'm having is that my nose gear explodes on take off and landing causing the plane to crash when I use the 4 or 6 wheeled landing gear that problem is non-existence but if the plane veers to the left or right I can't correct it and it crashes I want all landing gear to be steerable so i don't have this problem.

that's the problem let me know if you need more detail.

I think the problem you all are really having here is landing gear placement. It is possible to create planes that weigh several hundred tons and still use the stearable nose gear. (Like my A-380) Just make sure the main gear is close to the center of mass. This will also help you rotate on takeoff.  Granted, the largest steering gear is a bit small physically... would be nice to be able to make it taller.

At least give us the option of a taller steerable gear set so we don't have planes that plow the nose into the runway when speeding up for takeoff.

The alternative is to have the medium gear and have it dangling 3 feet under your plane using struts, which is just ugly.
