Spaceship shaking itself apart

Recommended Posts

OK what now?

Finishing orbital construction of my interplanetary cruiser,  the last tanker undocks, and the whole ship starts to shimmy and then shake, and then it shakes itself totally apart!

I’ve turned off SAS, has no effect (actually seems worse?) I’ve deactivated each and every SAS module, same problem.  (even the probe cores) Then I notice that as I undock the tanker, the CoM shifts directly into the center of one of the SAS modules. (hmmm, maybe a bug?) So I tried an experiment, I undocked a different ship from the other end of the cruiser first, the ship remained in stable.  Then I undocked then tanker, still stable.  I was able to dock back all of the other ships and finish construction. :)

I figured it out!(I thought) I made a mental note, to tell you guys in the forum about that.

then I save and reload the game.

As soon as the ship loads in the physics engine, it starts to shimmy, and then shake, and it shakes like a rag doll in a dog’s mouth, and its gets all explody. And nothing I do SAS or otherwise seems to help.

Any ideas?

That behavior is usually related to bad part clipping, in my experience.

Not always. I experienced similar issues with my Mun base with hardly any clipping going on. I blamed the landing legs physics, but hearing this, it might have not been the case.

The thing that saved my base was installing KJR - I don't know how it helped, but the base is nice and stable now, so I think it might be worth a try for your ship as well.

I was having some nasty shaking due to - of all things - too many struts.

So do I, but only 4 to a basic landing can. I call it the "Mun Polar Curse" It always appear on my Munar space station I set in a polar orbit (usually my first mission to strip science from Mun, my subsequent stations are equatorial because I don't need to land everywhere any more.

Well, the difference in behavior from startup to reload basically means that there is a variable that's not getting reinitted somewhere.

And enjoy your patience while you have it ... I used to be that way, but it goes away slowly over a few decades.
