Quasi-realism half-wanted

Hi all :)

Any suggestions for part packs that have realistic engine models and perhaps a mod that has the proper fuel types?

What I want:

- buttless engines

- large variety of vacuum and lifters

- engines that look/are realistic (vacuum engines with large bells especially - always thought that was a major downfall of the poodle)

- real fuels (but not RealFuels...not that keen on boil off)

I had an in-depth read of the RO suite, and some of it sounds great, but things like ullage and finite ignitions don't really tickle my fancy (not that they aren't awesome in that set of mods, just looking for something a bit less hardcore)

Thanks in advance!

:)

Buttless engines/realistic engines:

There's probably a config for realfuels to avoid boiloff. As for the other mods, I don't know.

The problem I have with suggesting Ven's Stock Revamp to people for purely visual reasons is that it does a lot more than just changing the way the parts look. It also makes invasive gameplay changes all over KSP, some of which make frankly no sense (for example, it makes the starter parachute completely useless for anything but the first launch, and then gives you a high altitude drogue chute in the same form factor that is stronger than a 2.5m main chute... wut?!).

Instead, you could try Cryogenic Engines:

High quality engine models inspired by real-life counterparts, custom visual and sound effects. Even has an RL-10-lookalike with an extending nozzle skirt, fully animated.

It comes with very basic boiloff mechanics, which affect only liquid hydrogen, and only if you try to load it into stock tanks. But the mod also ships its own special hydrogen tanks, which are "immune" to boiloff in exchange for consuming electric charge (simulating active cryocooling). Finally, you can even get rid of boiloff outright by simply not installing the bundled CryoTanks (because the plugin that adds boilfoff is part of that). Just keep in mind that the engines are strictly better than stock engines, and that the boiloff is intended to be the balancing factor for that performance advantage.

You can of course 'borrow' single engines from addons like FASA or Raidernick's stuff or the good old Bobcat's soviet engines pack.

Not sure if they all have proper RF configs, but they sure all have working RO-RF configs and are mostly buttless and have plenty diversity, soaring boosters or silently hissing vacuum engines, some even come with several different engine configs.

The FASA engines can be acquired quite easily, just download the FASA modpack, install it, then delete everything not beeing an engine, same with Raidernick's addon suite. (R-7 = delight^^)

To get Bobcat's soviet engines, you need to follow the white rabbit/fill in the missing mediafire link credentials from his release thread, they are still there, the DL links have merely been 'censored' because of funky reasons. (Grown ups not able to deal with sexy stuff from mediafire advertisements -.-)

peace

Thanks very much to both of you - will definitely take a look at the Cryogenic mod, that looks awesome. But then so does VSR for the buttless engines.

I have used FASA before and loved its engines, but there's a lot of other parts - didn't realise you could pick and choose what you wanted by simply deleting. Thanks!
