Staging Crashes the Game

Recommended Posts

I have a problem with the game crashing when I try and launch a certain craft.  (Pictures and link to craft file below.)  The radial boosters stage just fine.  But when I go to do the first stage on the central stack, the game “quits unexpectedly”.

The problem seems center around the stage with the orange tank.  But this is the fuel transport vehicle that I’m trying to get to my surface base on the moon.  If I remove the orange tank (and thus anything attached to it) the problem doesn’t occur.

I normally run modded, but I've verified that the problem persists when I run unmodded.

The craft file and pictures...

Hi @davidpsummers, I see the first decoupler on your stack is a TR-38-D, as you are crashing I guess you run OSX.

If that's the case then this is from the known issues list.

Quote

KSP crashes to desktop when decoupling a TR-38-D decoupler.

The TR-38-D decoupler is the only physicsless decoupler in the game, to help reduce wobble on large vessels, but while this decoupler is fine on Windows and Linux it will cause a crash on OSX.

No cause for this crash is known.

Workaround

Edit the part.cfg file in GameData/Squad/Parts/Structural/Size3Decoupler in any text editor.

Change PhysicsSignificance = 1 to PhysicsSignificance = 0

If this doesn't help you then we will need your full logs and system information, as per the support sticky here.

In addition to what sal said, try launching without the fairing built and see if it still crashes. I've found an issue with the fairings that seems to be causing some seemingly unrelated problems, so I'm curious if this is the same. I will give yor craft a try in a bit to see if I can replicate it here. Thanks for uploading it. :)

Cheers,

I had tried it without the fairing module complete, since that has been a source of trouble and no luck.  OTOH, I use a Mac and your fix in the part.cfg module worked.

Though, ironically, removing the orange tank did fix the problem, except that was whole point of the launch.  :-)

Will this make my rockets more wobbly?  Should I change it back now that I have launched (since it doesn't happen most of the time?)
