Kerbin Landspeed Competition

Recommended Posts

Hello, fellow Kerbinlings (Kerbals). :)

With my first post I bring you the landspeed challenge. I\'ve started it off myself with a short example which can be seen in the video below. Hopefully there are enough Kerbals out there to compete!

Kerbin Landspeed Competition

Overview:

The landspeed challenge is about building the fastest moving object to have ever crossed the surface of Kerbin. There will be six category\'s and a general set of rules which apply to all. Your prize is being renowned for your engineering skills throughout the whole of Kerbin!

Rules

[list type=decimal]

[li]Be honest with your results (no cheating). This is just a friendly competition. I don\'t see any reason to lie![/li]

[li]You must use stock/vanilla parts[/li]

[li]After taxiing your vehicle to the starting position, there must be no separation stages.[/li]

[li]After reaching your top-speed, you must come to a halt and your vehicle must survive. If anything breaks from your final stage before stopping then your result does not count.[/li]

[li]Your craft must stay on the ground at all times during reaching your full speed. Slight bumps in the terrain and off of the runway are allowed. But do not intentionally leave the ground.[/li]

[li](Doesn\'t apply to platinum league) You may use up to 6 fuel tanks per engine. No more. (not including fuel for taxiing engines)[/li]

[li]Start at 0m/s[/li]

[li](Doesn\'t apply to RCS league) You may use RCS only for stability, steering and sticking to the ground. No forward thrust.[/li]

[li]You must post a screenshot(s) of your machine and report the maximum ground speed you achieved, how many engines you used and the name of your craft. (video optional).[/li]

Notes:

I intend to keep updating the results here, eg. if you beat first place, then he/she will then become second. You may use any path to reach your highest speed. Your highest ground speed will be recorded in your flight results and the end of the run (but only accurate if you restart the flight from the hangar). You may hold one position per category.

227.8 with 1 engine, just after it flipped over and subsequently detonated.

Welcome to the forums!

I\'ve also got 199.9 with three engines, 253.8 with 2 engines, and 263.5 with 4 engines.

Oh, and 1500 after my capsule flipped, the fuel tank exploded, and my capsule was jetisonned at absurdly high speed away from the crash site.

277.9 with 13 engines. I think I\'m done with this for now, I\'ll let others in :)

Also, if you do \'restart flight\' the maximum speed over land is totally inaccurate. For me, I start off with a supposed speed of 3500 or so, and that is what shows in the flight report.

Looks like you had the same idea I had! I just built this car today, and then checked in to see if there were any landspeed records:

I hit 337 m/s, WITH CREW SURVIVAL! (I think that should be an intregal part of the contest) ;)

Didn\'t full read the rules ... so I complied and retried it. Had to pull off the seperation stage engine, and I was still able to hit 311 m/s with my one engine craft. Followed all the rules (I think) this time.

Thanks for trying. Interesting rockets. :)

@Bluejayjack

You mention that your cars explode. Your concoctions must make it to the top speed and then back to a standstill without any destroyed modules. Let me know if I\'m wrong, but I\'m afraid I can\'t put your results in if you didn\'t manage to stop the craft after reaching your top speed. Sorry.

@Excl

A better screenshot of your craft would be cool. 8) Don\'t worry epic result still counts.

271 m/s with 3 engines

Also there should be a RCS league

Nice speed and idea.

Do you have any suggestions on how this should be limited though? Like, how many RCS thrusters would one be allowed to use?

edit. added an additional rule, just to clarify a few things.

  • [li]You may use RCS for stability, steering and sticking to the ground.[/li]

also, close to 2nd place with one engine at 215m/s :P

The difficulty with building RCS powered craft is finding the balance between thrust, stability, and weight. So in my opinion the RCS league should be similar to the Platinum league in that there is no limit. It doesn\'t matter if you use 3, 30, or 300 RCS blocks because the most optimal design is the one that will win.

Your wish has been granted.

Can all my records be placed on the leaderboard please? :)

Yep. Sure. I didn\'t miss yours, I just need to know if you managed to stop your cars without them exploding or not. As I mentioned a few posts back.

Woops, sorry about that, I missed that part of the challenge and your post. With the exception of the 9 engine one they all would not be stopable, as they would explode soon after the maximum velocity. I\'ll do another screenshot later to show that, and attempt to make some more stable craft!

Good challenge, and good entry to the forums :)

I\'m not sure my time is valid. I think there is some sort of bug in the code where if you get a *little bit* of air-time, it throws the numbers all off. I think I was getting a slight bit of a jump when I went off the end of the runway ... and even though I wasn\'t really in the air long, and I didn\'t get any substantial acceleration, it still made the numbers jump up.

I flipped the car around and ran it on the flat ground ... and got a speed of around 205 m/s on the ground. Changed a motor around, and I hit 210. Changed a few more things and hit 245, BUT crashed into the water when the chute failed. Started tinkering a little too much, and now my ship torques violently out of control randomly between 205 and 215. Naturally, I never saved the early versions, so now I\'m stuck with the explosive lawn darts. :(

Bluejayek, you now have a platinum record for your car with nine engines.

Excl, I\'ve removed your record for now. Let us know when you have a new solid high speed record.

In the interest of fairness, reduce my record to 273.4. It is the highest I can provide evidence for at the moment. I am finding that a certain distance from the KSC the ground gets bumpy, which is... Not good for my unstable design. Screenshot of maximum velocity and slowed to a halt.

I hope you will accept this revised 3 engine entry at 260.3. I didn\'t technically get it to a safe stop; once I hit that speed and coasted down a bit, I turned around and headed back for the KSC. WHen I got there, I attempted to taxi it back onto the runway ready for refueling and another run, but when i tried to come up onto the runway proper the wheels fell off, as there apparently is no ramp :(

Obeys the spirit of the challenge if not the letter.
