Kerbalism or TAC Life Support

How to: KSP

Recommended Posts

Having used TAC, and watched others use Kerbalism, it'd be hard to make a recommendation seeing as you haven't really mentioned what you're looking for.

TAC simply does life support - as long as you've got food, water, oxygen and electricity you're golden. Kerbalism works in this way, but with many more aspects built into it as well - solar storms, crew sanity etc. If you're looking for realism in the purest sense, Kerbalism is the way forward. Otherwise, TAC. It's a good middle point.

For streaming, I'd recommend TAC. With TAC, your missions will only fail by your mistake (not packing enough LS), meaning there will be less failure and as a viewer, I'd prefer to see success than constant failure for reasons out of your control. Kerbalism is certainly more likely to mess you up.

You didn't mention it, but I'll throw USI Life Support out there. When I did the research I felt like it offered a good balance of playability and "realism". Basically it includes food / air / water as one source called "supplies" and waste / CO2 / wastewater as "Mulch" (strange name). So, you are accounting for what your crew needs in order to survive without having to discreetly track a bunch of different resources / waste products.

I also like that that Mulch + Electricity + Fertilizer can be reprocessed into Supplies again with greenhouses.

+1 to USI Life Support. Basically same reason tjt said. Also there is quite a bit of customization if you find the default settings too forgiving like I did.

But that is what better  suits my taste.

One other consideration is mod compatibility.  While TAC-LS and USI-LS work well with many other mods, Kerbalism at least at one point had some severe incompatibilities.  I know that has been worked on but I still don't think it has the same level of compatibility/integration with some other popular mods.

I noticed this too...Kerbalism was really compelling in the sense that he'd built an integrated system of features with persistent behaviors in the background. The tradeoff is that I'd have to be really careful about which other mods I'd use - and even which game version I was running
