Dwarf Fortress

So while waiting for .16 to come out, I decided to try picking up DF again. I\'d tried it out when I first heard about it but it was way too overwhelming. Now I\'m starting out with the quickstart tutorial and it\'s making a lot more sense.

I don\'t think I\'ll ever get any work done again, ever.

I know right? DF is undoutedly one of the most awesome games out there! Even if it does look like Tron vomit with the standard texture pack, you can still have plenty of !!FUN!! By the way, I suggest getting the Lazy Newb Pack, it will do WONDERS. Also, don\'t dig super deep too early, the circus isn\'t to be trifled with.

The game is amazing once you get past the learning curve (More like overhang, amirite?).

I think it\'s also safe to say thet have one of, if not the single best community in all the internet. Friendly, polite, helpful and intelligent. Most people put that down to the fact that if you\'re smart enough to learn DF, you\'re generally a good person to have around.

I stopped playing DF because the interface is far too shoddy and overcomplicated for me to keep caring long enough to invest my time in giant megaprojects. Might try again, but I dunno.

Sorry to hear, the interface is a bit daunting isn\'t it? I don\'t really go into much of the super-complex things like SOAP MAKING

or sometimes even THE MILITARY. Maybe that\'s why I always die, because I rely on traps too much and don\'t actually have a military short of some dogs.

Where the hell did my morning just go!? Oh yeah. Spent a year starting a fortress and then discovered during the first winter that I head no water source. Oh well. losing is fun, right?

I think I\'m going to be hearing that music loop in my dreams tonight.

At least it kept me from refreshing Harv\'s post page every ten minutes!

I tried it a few times, then gave up.

A few weeks later, i saw this topic and thought 'why not try it again?'

I found a version that doesn\'t play the music and now I FINALLY managed to (mostly) understand it.

Do post the version please!

Do post the version please!

I do believe that it is the MASTERWORK Mod for DF, and I think that the no-music is either an option or a bug.

Besides, can you just turn the volume down on the game. The music is also pretty catchy and I like it, what\'s so bad about it?

Too many people give up on DF too early... it is truly an incredible game.

Once you climb the learning cliff it is quite fun, the community is very helpful and it has an extensive wiki. However, you must remember that all forts are doomed from the start and losing is !!FUN!!

Ha ha, I always used traps and then walled myself in. It\'s really the clunkiness of the interface that gets me — the fact that I may have to execute hundreds of keystrokes just to build a simple stone tower or enclosure on the surface — it\'s quite daunting at times, indeed. Then there come megaprojects...

The main problem for me is that I never really devoted much of my brainpower to planning in DF. That\'s really my fault. When it takes me a year to get things carved out just to deal with the usual influx of immigrants streaming into my fort before winter, the thought of planning some gigantic project and managing all the associated logistics didn\'t strike me as something I particularly wanted to sink my time into. I could have set a much lower population cap and solved that problem, but I was ignorant and lazy.

But over all, Dwarf Fort didn\'t really draw me in, didn\'t offer me a very high level of immersion for a game world supposedly so rife with characters and rich in generated detail. For one thing, I like to play games so I can make things that satisfy others, whether IRL people or in-game characters, and to be honest DF lacks in that area...

Too many people give up on DF too early... it is truly an incredible game.

Personally, what draws me to many games isn\'t just the gameplay, it\'s the 'lore' or 'fluff' of the setting involved (or the settings that the game generates). And in my estimation, on the lore front, DF just doesn\'t have much going for it... I\'ve seen beautiful works of art and writing made by players (I\'ve made one or two myself, not nearly so beautiful though), based on their fortresses\' histories and various statistics pulled up from the Legends window, but really — who are the dwarves? Or the elves or the humans or the demons or anyone in the generated settings, for that matter? The world I meet in Adventure Mode is, to put it bluntly, a buggy wasteland of cultureless cities full of samey houses and faceless nobodies with nothing interesting to say to anyone. Legends mode is fun to peek around in for a giggle or a gasp or two or to get a list of kobold names to play around with in my own settings, but after that there\'s really nothing to see unless you have a very active imagination... which I do, but I feel it would be better spent creating worlds of my own design than fleshing out the rather ephemeral randomly generated world of a half-finished video game.

I have a hard time playing DF, but this is all I know.

Lava does everything. Cannons, orbital destruction devices, etc.

PS: What I mean by orbital destruction devices is that a guy put a lava cannon so high up, that it went in all directions and also made the outside nearly inaccessible for days on end.

ohgod you guys made me wanna play it again. i played it a very long time ago, 3 years ago or maybe even more! ahh good old dwarf fortress. does someone remember the gold old utter newbie tutorial? its still online. i learned it quite fast from it, and after the basics i used the df wiki to learn all the hard (but the BEST!) parts of the game, like automatic pumps and very creative traps.

ohman, i always trapped goblins in cage traps and brought them to the arena to fight with dogs. i still remember the good times when 3 dogs fighted a naked goblin and blood was everywhere. after some fights the whole arena was red from it and the cleaners puked everywhere hahaha. LOSING IS !!FUN!!

I kind of like the music. It reminds me that time is passing while I\'m playing, and reminds me to look at the clock every once in a while to see how many hours it is past the time I said I\'d stop playing.

To those who are too intimidated to get started, I highly recommend the quickstart guide (http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2012:Quickstart_guide). It really helps you get going on it and make sense of the seemingly limitless menus of actions. The rest of the wiki is also pretty indispensable. I usually have at least five or six tabs of it open at any given time while I\'m playing.

And Nova, sorry you don\'t have as much time to play as you used to, but I am also pretty glad about the stuff you have to do instead. Keep up the good work!

I love DF, LNP (Lazy Noob Pack) Kinda making my own TP :) But, erm.. it\'s kinda like a TMI that missed the Mun, and ended up exiting Kerbol\'s SoI and is now in the middle of nowhere. And so is the Texture pack.
