There is a joke of a German tank commander who was captured and was talking to a GI captor.

GI: So I heard a German tank could kill 5 American tanks for each German tank

German: No, a German tank could kill 10 American tanks for each German tank.

GI: So how did we capture you then.

German: the Americans always brought 11 tanks for 1 of ours.

Yeah, that was only half a joke. My father was a tanker in WWII, he had some stories. Obligatory quote:

Yes - I was on the Eisenhower in the Indian Ocean and we stopped the ship for a day. The airdales created a hook out of metal, baited it, and promptly caught a large size shark.

Turned out that in addition to throwing the hook overboard, they had thrown all sorts of meat in the water to chum.

Unbeknownst to them, the reason we had stopped was to send divers over the side to clear out water intakes.

Needless to say, the divers were not all that excited to hear that people had been chumming for sharks while they were in the water!
