Great Canadian Buoyant Bellyflop Challenge

Recommended Posts

So during testing of the latest build of Vessel Mover it was discovered that if you spawn a vessel over the ocean with launch clamps attached your craft will be spawned attached to the sea floor. Now, as the BDAc team works toward a solution (something to do with raycasts), I figured I'd make a challenge out of this glitch so we all can have some fun with it

The challenge is to build a craft that has no propulsion and see how high above the surface of sea you can launch it ... The buoyancy of your craft is how you will propel it through the water and it will give you the momentum to launch into the air

Vessel Mover is required

Directions:
1- Build craft then attach launch stability enhancers, save craft
2- Launch craft then move vessel with vessel mover to location on the water of your choice (anywhere on Kerbin)
3- Spawn the saved vessel beside the first vessel (your vessel will spawn attached to the sea floor)
4- Stage the clamps and watch your vessel rise to the surface and launch into the air

Pictures/Video or it didn't happen (video preferred)

Highest altitude wins ... Bragging rights if you can belly flop your craft onto the first craft

See example video below

There is another part to this challenge for those of you who dare ... The Jaques Kousteau Hall of Fame

To be entered Hall of Fame, you must build a boat capable of launching a submersible with the intention of traveling to a point somewhere on the seas of Kerbin and launch your vessel. This board will record the depth achieved and the height you launch your vessel after blowing your ballast ... No parts can be jettisoned or decoupled from your submersible once it begins to rise and no mods that add parts

I don't have time to do the challenge but it seems to me the first step is to locate the deepest part of the ocean on Kerbin.  You continue to accelerate as you ascend so the deeper you are, the faster you will be when you breach.  I'm curious if KSP will recognize underwater terminal velocity.

So, if I hit my first vessel, but on the way up and get no altitude... does that count for anything?

I was getting about 20 m/s with a station core...

Sorry, no it doesn't ... That's part of the challenge in regards to the bragging rights - how high can you go and can you use the other vessel to break your fall

Ahhh. se la vie... I didn't film it anyway :P

Sounds fun! Mind if I try this stock? I've got an 8m jump on this one, but I think I can design something from scratch to push it way higher. Maybe not 300m high like yours, but high enough to make a splash!

From an earlier challenge, here's my island of Atlantis surfacing from the bottom of the sea. If stock is ok, please consider it a kick-off entry with a very low bar to beat! This one works by suddenly expelling the ore from several tanks and (detrimentally) inflating a heat shield. The next one? Hm. I'd need to hit the drawing board, which is a good sign. Let me know what you think about stock entries. Cheers!

Perhaps I can add a new category ... The Jaques Kousteau Hall of Fame

This would be where you build a boat that carries your submersible to wherever on Kerbin (like Jaques Cousteau in his many undersea adventures) and launch your submersible. See how deep you can get and then see how high you can launch your vessel out of the water by dumping your ballast

Woo! I've got a stock entry at 230m. I'm mostly posting so other folk can use the method if they want to try it stock.
As far as hydrodynaics goes, KSP handles it almost identically to aerodynamics. In that regards, the wings all exhibit negligible amounts of parasitic drag when they're level to the medium, so I figured they'd be a great first try. Sadly, they all seemed to explode underwater and fling the camera into outerspace at light speed, so that one was a bust! These worked nice, though. Did you know that the best submarines in KSP are actually planes?

The Bobber

513.png   514.png

The Bobber burns through the skies in hunt for deep waters. It doesn't actually need to go far!                With the aid of parachutes, it splashes down nose first, and jets slowly down into the water...

Near the ocean floor, the insanely buoyant fuselage releases from the rest of the craft                               Launch! It breaches out to 230 meters, CANNON BALL!

Though this particular launch went east, I've been aiming most of them south towards the eye of the smiley. It's only a couple hundred meters deeper, but still, how could you not want the deepest part of the ocean? Thanks for the challenge, @DoctorDavinci, this was a fun one!

Edit: As an aero(hydro)dynamics note, don't neglect to put pointy things on the bottom end- that side's draggy too!
