Workaround Industries Miniaturized Turboprop Plane

Recommended Posts

The product of an afternoon of toil, I present to you one of the ugliest propeller aircraft in existence, the PRMKII "Flywheel". Powered by a 24 blower turbine pushing a shaft nested in a heavily reinforced Stayputnik bearing, it can achieve a top speed of 80 m/s at high altitudes. Featuring a wheelless bearing, it can be much smaller than, say, the PR-0P series while having the same performance. Enough with the talking, here are the pictures already.

In order to provide the high degrees of stability, the entire fuselage of the craft is part of the bearing. This keeps it from wobbling too much, but also can cause a complete structural failure if something goes badly wrong inside the bearing.

A complex mechanism exists to stop the forces acting on the compressor blades from taking an unplanned vacation mid-flight. And unlike other turboprops, this one can fly easily with stock drag enabled, and possesses very good low-speed handling characteristics. It does take a gentle hand and some attention, though. To get your own, follow the link and follow all instructions in the KerbalX description. The engine is a wholly original design, which is a first for me. (Laughing audience footage)

Flies fine stock, but using a mod such as V.O.I.D for engine RPM readouts and Pilot Assistant to keep it pointed properly is recommended. Optimal RPM of 2220 (37 rad/s)
