Fighter Jet Speed Test

You want this on the leaderboard?

I think it was within the rules, so sure, we want it on the scoreboard. :)

Also, @AeroGav is probably within the challenge requirements too. His score was 1276 + 290 + 5 for a twin engine plane if I read it correctly. That's good for third place.

Thanks! :)

Frankly, the single engine no cheat mach 2list is a bit disappointing. Here's the X-1 High Speed Testing Vehicle.

1610m/s + 230G = 1840 score for the single engine spot, all without max temp cheats or autostrut. I'll do another run with two engines to see if I can beat the record.

This is my VTOL entry.  For scoring purposes, each variant is supersonic (345m/s) and can pull 10 Geez.  All are pure stock, no mods, no cheats, and less than 75 parts.

BeeGeez V906 Dreiflugelfledermaus is a tail-sitting, three-fore-engined VTOL.  Available in R, A, and T variants.

For this innovative airframe, we consulted with renowned engineer Werner von Kerman.  He described our concept as “Dreiflugelfledermaus” which Koogle translates to “Only an Engineer brings a Kwiss army knife to a swordfight.”  He then went muttering to his lab and designed a special helmet for the pilot.

Since the cockpit has no external visibility after mission-specific modules are installed, operation requires the Dunkle-Augen helmet, which actually costs more than the V906 airframe (HELMET SOLD SEPARATELY).

Features:

  • Three afterburning engines for mach 1 performance, mounted far forward for safer VTOL operation.
  • Six modular equipment legs that allow a single V906 airframe to fulfill a variety of roles.
  • Klaws for landing, to grip into slopes. (Slope gripping software not included, it is expected to be ready next year.)

Operational notice: Fighter escort is recommended for all Dreiflugelfledermaus variants, since none of them can defend themselves from aerial adversaries.

906R Rescue can transport eighteen Kerbals, whether they are assault troops, rescued hostages, or downed pilots plucked from the ocean.  Includes large parachutes for survivable touchdown when it runs out of fuel.  Extended range may feature in later versions.  Current model is not capable of air-to-air refuelling.

V906A Attack carries nine innovative HoverBombs, designed for precision ground strikes to be delivered while hovering directly over the target.

2nFWInc.png DfWmORh.png

Hoverbomb deployment, including innovative “air burst fuse” borrowed from the A300 project.

ufRxJFQ.png zUOjULk.png

Caution:

  • HoverBombs do not actually hover themselves, they require the A906 airframe to do so.
  • Hoverbombs are fragile, do not drop at high speed.
  • Landing is not recommended with a full load of HoverBombs.
  • Dropping HoverBombs is not recommended at low altitude.
  • Low altitude hover is recommended for best precision.

V906T Tanker launches with 4200 fuel aboard to supply a forward base or refuel aircraft stranded at locations without prepared runways.  Refuelling can be accomplished on the ground by hovering just over the receiving aircraft and klamping on with a klaw for transfer, or in the air by approaching from astern for docking into the central port.

Caution: Neither method has been tested, and neither is guaranteed to work in operation.  Refuelling capability is included as a bonus feature, but our bid for this contract did not include a testing budget.

V906F Fighter variant, with its fore-and-aft-firing missiles, was plagued by the pilots' inability to "think Krussian".

The Fighter variant was cut from the program due to the budgetary constraints of underbidding the competition.

But why be just a fighter when you can do three jobs half as well!

I am so shocked at how well you do this stuff! 10/10

Introducing... The brand-new Super Bomber X! (Bomb's not included)

Total score: 1264.5

Protip, it's F2 to hide the HUD and F1 to take a screenshot stored in \(Hard disk)\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Kerbal Space Program\Screenshots. Better than taking a shot with an iPod and taking a shot of the iPod with a camera.

I didn't want to deal with that headache, plus I just RRREEEAAALLLYYYY wanted to show this off, so It was the best thing possible at the time.

Protip: don't run KSP from the default Steam directory. Instead, copy the whole directory somewhere else and run it from there. KSP doesn't require Steam to be running, and it'll saveguard your game from forced patches/updates that may screw up your carefully modded install. It also allows you to keep an older version alongside the latest version pushed by Steam.

Well, it also works if you keep KSP in the same place and directly use KSP.exe instead of launcher.exe, which is what I'm doing.

Anything that can go 1km/s will be able to pull ridiculous maneuvers at that speed. There's no point in even giving it proper wings. A few days back I built a submarine with a Goliath engine. Discard the ore from the 10 or so 2.5m tanks and it rises up out if the ocean and can be flown as a plane and reach supersonic speeds at sealevel and pull 15+ gee turns.

Well, first post on these forums for me, but if I scored mine right, it should be 1505+72 (+5) = 1577 or 1582 points. The optional +5 is because I turned on infinite fuel to get to the northern ice shelf to land, but all flight records were done prior to that. Vehicle name X2.1.

I'll post a screen shot of the mission screen soon.

This was a fun challenge, I'm going to have to fiddle around to try and get more speed out of mine.

  • 3 weeks later...

Well I thought I'd take a crack at this

Behold, the Aurora Mk. I!

F46ED72E0CAF495E47BF359B5476464760256375

DC1922ED93C0AA8E9F11FF1AE939F63967E40708

Top Speed: 1,704 m/s

Most G-Force: 183.9Gs

Point total: 1,704+183.9=1,887.9 points (I did use the Ignore Max Temperature cheat, but I stayed under the part limit)

The Aurora Mk. I is a small, single engine craft designed around the philosophy of using minimal parts to decrease drag and weight. In order to meet this end, the engineers decided to completely forgo the use of vertical stabilizers, relying instead on thrust vectoring for control.
