Is it possible??

Recommended Posts

Get to orbit on SRM-L or SRM-S sounding rockets from Sounding Rockets Mod with < 30 parts.  You can use small probe and gyro if you have those parts . . . but now your down to 28 parts.  Post a video if you can, i am struggling but heard it can be done.

I've been trying.. gotten really close too.. but not quite. Think I need to try to get a lower Ap. The gyroscope is a bit of a PITA, too. Especially if you have CommNet enabled, because then you need to have an antenna, or you can't use the gyro.

Edit: Just realised I'm not really following the (so far) stated rules. This baby has a pair of SRM-XL SRB's and 3 SR-35A LFO tanks with a Mini Aerospike Engine bolted to them. Not exactly what was asked for. Doing it with just SRM-L and/or SRM-S SRB's.. now that will be quite a challenge.

Preliminary conclusions after trying with just those 2 booster types:

The  SRM-S are a waste of time. They simply don't have enough thrust to be useful.

Even with SRM-L's, I very much doubt it's possible to attain orbit, within the 30 part count limit. Sub-orbital, perhaps.

Maybe this was possible with 0.90 or 1.0.5, but with the current aerodynamics.. nope. Mind you, I'd be happy to be proven wrong.

I have come to the conclusion its just not possible anymore.  At least with 30 parts.  So that being said, use as many oarts as you can, but still use the same parts.  Good luck!

Well as long as your rocket is going fast enough one should be able to coast for 10 or 15 seconds before igniting the next stage.  That would stretch your fuel a bit and as long as you dump any asparagus-staged boosters one should be able to coast for a bit without a serious hit on velocity.

If you give it a try, you'll see it doesn't work. Coasting for even a few seconds wipes out most of the Ap you've gained. The low mass makes them very susceptible to drag. As gsamelon said:

i think their low mass and normal drag calcs really hamper their performance though for orbital.  As soon as the engine shuts off, they get blasted with air resistance.
