Wing Commander II YF-95 Morningstar

Recommended Posts

Anyone hanging around here who is old enough to have played the first entries of the Wing Commander franchise? I sure have and so I made a replica of my favourite Wing Commander II fighter.

So I proudly present the YF-95 Morningstar heavy fighter

I absolutely adored that thing back than and I still do now. Everything that dared to go infront of the three particle guns was doomed to a firey death. Even the infamous Gothri fighter introduced in Special Operations I became very managable with this beauty. The Morningstar was also the only craft that carried a very awesome missile weapon: The "Mace" torpedo. The Mace was a tactical nuke which was the only weapon that could destroy a capital ship in one hit. You needed two regular torpedoes to do this normally. You better were out of the way fast though because it really took no prisoners. The Mace was also capable of nuking an entire squad of enemy fighters a trick that I managed only once as a vee lad. I fired it and "Maniac" your wingman started firing on the enemy ships, hit the Mace, and boom 5 enemy fighters destroyed at once.

Since it is a space superiority fighter of course I had to make my replica be able to go to orbit. As you can see it does with two RAPIERs, but it is a pretty sluggish affair. You first have to climb slowly to about 13000 to 14000 meters and than fly down in a 5 to 10 degree angle so it picks up enough speed for the RAPIERs to really kick in. It is much more fun to fly with two Whiplash engines. Since the Morningstar is basically an atmosphere fighter put into space this replica works REALLY well. It has great flight characteristics in stock and was so well balanced from the get go that you can fly this machine the same way if the tanks are full or empty.

I created a replica previously but it was nowhere near as good and true as this one, thanks to the Aviation Cockpits trainer cockpit. It uses a lot of procedurally generated parts so it is light on the part count with around 60 parts.

Mods used: Aviation Cockpits, B9 Procedural Parts, B9-Aerospace, Aviation Lights

@DarkOwl57 Agreed, Origin created a beautiful fighter back than.

A fun bit of trivia on the reveal of the existence of the "Mace" torpedo to the player character in the Wing Commander Kilrathi Saga:

Todd Marshall: "Hey, Maverick, remember when I told you that this baby had capabilities I couldn’t talk about? Well, this ship is equipped with a new type of missile called the Mace. It’s a tactical nuke!"

Christopher Blair: "There’s a nuclear missile in my ship?!"

Todd Marshall: "Yeah! Great, isn’t it? Listen, the best way to use it is to fire it at the enemy squadron when you first see ’em. I also use my particle cannons to set it off, once it’s out of range. Just don’t aim it at anything near you!"

Christopher Blair: "I wish I thought you were kidding about this, Todd!"
