Why the Necro-Phobia?

I couldn't help but notice that every time someone necro's an old thread it gets Insta-locked, I'm curious as too why?

Sure they're old and the OP may not still be around, but so far this has been the only forum I've participated in that treats it this way.

They dont always get insta-locked, but usually a post is "necro'd" because someone doesnt notice that the last post was a year ago (I've done this several times) and they won't know not to expect a reply and things can get a little confused, especially if things have changed over time. When a thread is locked, it is done by the moderators.

Not all (or even most) necroed threads get locked. A thread that is still relevant and doesn't contain outdated information that is necroed with a post that contains actual content is fine. We'll also close it if there is a more current thread on the topic.

I was wondering the same too. And who does the locking? Squad? Or the forum mods? And are the mods employed by Squad?

The forum moderators handle this sort of thing. We are volunteers from the community who help out with the running of the forum.

Remember that KSP evolves quickly. When someone dredges up a two year old post about jet engines, it's completely irrelevant to the jet engines in the game today. Locking such threads down helps stop new players getting confused about whether a thread is relevant to the problems/experiences they're having. It's better for people to make a new post about jet engines in 1.2.1 than to spend three days confused and thinking they should be able to cruise at 30km altitude because they read outdated information :)

At least, that's why I would lock necro'd threads :)

*edit* Ironically the OP is 6 days old at this point, but whatevs.

The thing is when I have seen locked threads in the past that Google has delivered to me I often assume it is locked because there is nothing more to be said on the topic and so don't make a new more relevant thread to address my issue and go on what that topic says. Naturally at times this causes much confusion and frustration.

If the thread is locked due to not being relevant any more it would be nice if the Mods would state that when locking it. (I have seen them link to more relevant threads at times to be fair)
But it would be nice if the mods could be a bit more vigilant in stating why a thread has been locked in the future.

Knowing this now I personally will create newer "duplicate" threads to address more up to date issues when I find an old thread with no newer more accurate ones available.

We almost always do. Very occasionally we will lock something at OP's request and not post as it would bump an old thread that the OP would prefer stay dead.

Not sure why you would take that as a lesson from this.

I meant with good judgement of course. If I google about and don't find any more relevant up to date info and the thread is about say ISP in atmo and the last post is from a year or more ago I think it may be safe to assume a more recent and more up to date and relevant thread may be in order what with new parts and updates and tweaks under the hood. Rather than what I usually do and just assume the math hasn't changed and then get confused when I'm not getting the TWR or results I'm expecting from my engines and so forth.

  • 2 weeks later...

Wait, doesn't locking old threads help reduce usage on the forum server? Surely keeping large amounts of threads running would have some effect...

aaand the thread has been unused for a few months...

the irony.

Err, only if there was a post being integrated.

There is no performance difference for a locked thread vs an unlocked thread.

This thread is quite old. Please consider starting a new thread rather than reviving this one.
