I think that adding controllable parafoils would make certain landing ops much easier

If you mean steerable parachutes then yes, I think that could be a neat addition.  I'm not sure of the technical side of using them IRL, but I wouldn't be surprised if they don't work well with multiples on the same vessel so we may need at several sizes, ranging up to VERY BIG to be considered for use on Duna.

For those of you who can't decipher what's going on; that is a Saturn 1 empty booster which had a deployable glider wings. This was a concept NASA has considered for recovering boosters as well as capsules, specifically the Gemini capsule.

Just my twelve cents on the matter.
