Looking for RP opinions

I am playing my career play through and one of my RP rules is Kerbals can only be in hitchhikers or science labs for extended duration missions.  I got a rescue contract for a kerbal around Duna.  I have my Science ship there for a quick rescue but the kerbal would have to return in a lander can (which would normally violate my RP rules)

My question to you is this.  Would you rather be rescued now and have to spend a year and a half in a lander can or be rescued in 3 years when I can send a habitable module?

After all, if I wait then where will I spend the three years?

Get me home asap in the lander can.  As long as I don't have to reenter Kerbin's atmosphere in it.

In KSP I'd use the lander can, mate.

In real life I think it would be cool to live on the surface of another world for 3 years (provided you could keep me safe from all the hazards) after all I spent 2 years Parabadoo and that's as close to Duna as you can get in Australia.

Also I think I'd like Vicodin flavoured potatoes....

If you tweak your rule to say that you will never plan any mission where a Kerbal is going to spend extended periods of time in anything other than Hitchhiker or MPL, then you're still good. The rescue contract was an unplanned event, so it sounds reasonable that he would be grateful enough to put up with suboptimal living conditions on his way home, especially if he's only one guy in a 2-man can.

Rescue now. Sure, it'd be like living in a prison cell for a year, but it's totally survivable, and he or she can catch up on a lot of reading, movies, and video games during the trip.
