There's a little cube at the centre of each asteroid. Its visible when you rotate the view and zoom inside an asteroid.

That is a grey asteroid in an unusual shape.

ha I had also just noticed this today! Actually kinda freaked me out, I was trying to get a nice shot of a craft approaching an asteroid so I'd focused the camera on the asteroid and then after the craft docked I hit V to change camera mode and suddenly there was this weird alien cube staring at me. Like some kinda minimalist borg cube.
