Win 10 Oh no not again!

operating systems need to be more minimalist. im tired of them trying to do every damn job you need your computer to do (and poorly, so much you need to get a 3rd party application to do it). even some linux distros have this problem but not to the degree windows does. i rather like some of those raspberry pi distros, because they are so damn slim and stay out of your way.

And don't get me started on the bloatware they load on the hardrive.with a new computer. Although it is loaded with junk it does not have software to play a DVD. Free and easy to get but come on....

i hate preinstall software. i normally build my own rigs, but if im in the market for a laptop, im going to make damn sure i reinstall the os from scratch. the os alone is bad enough without all the bundleware gumming up the works.

That bloatware (which I agree is annoying) helps keep the cost of that new PC so low. DVD player software is problematic as they are supposed to pay royalties for it, and playing DVDs on a computer is becoming more and more of an edge case (a lot of machines don't even have the drive for it anymore).

So the laptop is set to metered connection and all apps are supposed to be set to not be live in the background. New data period started Thursday. I checked this morning and 3Gb already gone for the period. Microsoft, Windows 10 is the worst virus I have ever experienced. It must be upgrading to the anniversary edition. Joy! Not!

But I still have a crate of 5 1/4" floppies. So, they aren't coming back? Kidding (about the coming back - I really do have a bunch of them and 3 1/2 floppies).

The Anniversary Update is 263MB. Something else is eating your bandwidth (whether Windows-related or not).

Hmmmm. Well, it is now set to airplane mode. Looks like a trip to a public hotspot and let it get this out of its system.

Oh yeah, big time.

I got a new computer this summer, and I was really surprised that it didn't have a DVD player. In fact, none of the models I looked at had them. But I digress.

Protip: Add the Microsoft domain to your firewall's blacklist and never get another annoying message again!

Microsoft has Windows 10 connecting to literally thousands of domains. There is no easy way out, unfortunately. Microsoft seems to obfuscate and confuse what Windows 10 does as much as possible. Even a VPN gets bypassed intentionally, unless you very carefully turn that off. That is stuff that gets people locked up or even killed in unsavoury regimes.

Probably because it's a bad OS. If they told you what's going on, it would make things worse.

I think many of Windows 10's less savory features were meant to combat piracy and counterfeiting.

Possibly. But

A. That's not the OS's job, and

B. If you don't do any of those things, and care about your privacy, it's extremely irritating that you can't turn them off.

Poor you :( I was forced to upgrade to Windows 10 too.

I hear ya... my new computer came with it already installed.  I haven't had too many problems, but I really didn't want to have to learn how to use Windows all over again either.  :(
