How to steer your ship?

Orbit

Recommended Posts

I have this game for a while now, and while I do know the basics, I can\'t get to the Mun just because I can\'t steer the ship to the direction I want.

When the ship is relatively heavy with engines and stuff, it\'s very hard for me to steer it. I can press the WASD buttons all I want, but I get no direct feedback to how the ship responds. Then all of a sudden the ship jerks around and gets unstoppable.

I know the navball is the leading point in this, but I still can\'t figure it all out somehow. Any tips for steering the ship controllably?

Hello,

Try to use engines with Thrust Vectoring, that helps a bit. Also, you can use RCS to help the turns, but activate them only when you really need them, as they consume it\'s fuel quite fast.

If the ship is really heavy, then you should be patient and do really slow turns, because if the turn picks up speed, you\'ll have a hard and frustrating time controlling the ship again. Small taps of the direction keys help me a lot with heavy ships. SAS helps a lot also...

Hope this helps...

Some or all of the engines in any stage should be the gimbal type (ie. directional thrust). In the atmosphere, controllable fins (eg. AV-R8 Winglet) also help steer (IMO really only good for first stage).

I also recommend always having an ASAS module on any serious craft. Note that to steer you should have SAS turned off, then have it on when you want to hold a direction.
