Stuck on "Loading Asset Bundle Definitions" KSP 1.2.2

Recommended Posts

Am running Windows 10 on an HP laptop, 2.10GHz i3, 6GB of RAM.

Every single time I try to load KSP it gets stuck on Loading Asset Bundle Definitions. I have completely wiped KSP from my hard drive and reinstalled, searched and tried half a dozen solutions to the problem and nothing works. The game is installed through Steam.

Okay.

What happens when you run the KSP.exe or KSP_x64.exe directly?

How long have you left it to load?

Can you check process explorer to see if KSP is a low integrity process, if it is you are suffering from a Unity3D engine bug, which may also explain why it's slow/unable to load the asset bundles.

Running either of them directly yields the same result, both normally and as an administrator.

I've left it up for over 30 minutes with no change.

I checked process explorer, and it was showing up as "medium" on the integrity level column.

I think it's worth noting I only started encountering this problem yesterday. Before I was running multiple mods, but have since uninstalled them to try and fix this issue.

EDIT: When running as an administrator, the integrity shows up as "high"

Hmm okay, well there was an update on Thursday, Steam would have updated KSP when you next started the client, but the Unity version was not changed so mods should still work, the only issue there is with the mod version checker.

The asset bundles have not been changed, so KSP should be working normally, have you carried any files over such as saves?

If you ever backed up KSP Steam may have backed up mod files with it, have you checked the install for files and folders with mod names that shouldn't be there?

I have not carried over any files or backed up KSP. My first attempt at fixing this I went through steam and used "Delete Local Content" then reinstalled. After that did not work I used it again and then made sure my steam folder was clear of anything related to KSP. Mod files, save files, all deleted.

Oddly enough, through steam you can access previous versions. I did this to install KSP 1.1.3 and tried it. Seems like it hangs up for about half a minute on the asset bundles but then finishes loading the game. After installing just one mod (mech jeb) that would be compatible with that version of KSP it froze again.

Asset bundles do take a little longer to load, there doesn't seem to be a way to improve that, they are a Unity engine format.

But they should not take long, your KSP.log file will show how long each file is taking, for me on Linux this is about 22 seconds out of 32.

Are you overclocking? That can cause issues.

I can't give you an answer at this time, sorry but this should not be happening, some other players also report slow loading but none that KSP just fails to load on Windows.

I'll ask a few Windows people I know to look into this for you, I guess in the mean time you can try KSP with the KSPedia folder removed, it's in GameData, just don't open the KSPedia or KSP will lock up.

Another thing to try might be a clean boot to test KSP in a clean Windows environment, though this can't rule out a problem in Windows itself it's unlikely, especially as 1.1.3 is working.

Removing KSPedia seems to have worked in the meantime. This could work as a permanent fix for me, I don't really use it anyway. I imagine by the next patch this will be fixed, so this will work for me. Thanks for your help! Although if you ever find out what might have caused this issue let me know.

I might be close to finding the cause, or more accurately Skavies might be close, if you do your own Windows installs you might need to try the same thing he's done with his network.
