Munar Dakar 2017

Recommended Posts

@Magzimum i get what youre saying about the common sizing of the race times. The rover race is such a small percentage of the total time, it doesn't matter how well youre rover does.... however, if everyone gets to the mun in 6 hours then the rover portion absolutely matters. I am open to the possibility of changing the penalty for landing away from KSC. However if the race is tight, a 30 minute difference is quite a lot. You are correct about the timing of the kerbin/mun orientation, and no i do not have a specific date and time for the launches, this is part of the challenge in figuring out when a good time to launch is.

i propose we see how it goes as it stands and make adjustments from there.

@DoctorDavinci I will get the save file uploaded this evening 5-6 pm (Mountain standard time +7)

One thing I'd like to know: How are we going to get the rover back to the KSC? I don't have any mods like Infernal Robotics to lift a rover up into a cargo bay, and my plans really revolve around a drop-pod like thing. Please advise

@Leafbaron - anxiously awaiting the save file :)

@Magzimum - I like the idea as it stands, it is about the journey there and back again

Also, I've hit speeds over 40m/s on the mun ... perhaps a rethink of your rover designs might be in order if you can only hit 5m/s

my god man, 40 m/s!? i learned my lesson between 20 and 30 m/s.

The rover does not need to come back to KSC. I suppose we could visit the possibility of time reductions for bringing it back.

Maybe we could have 2 classes? 1 class goes back to the KSC, the other class stays on the mun?

No need to return the rover, just get your Kerbal back to the KSC

40 m/s on this track may be unreasonable. since the majority of it is through the canyon to the east of the east farside crater. there are quite a few *bumps* althought it does lend itself to riding the canyon walls i suppose.

the dilemma, upload the save file in 45 minutes on my lunch break without thorough testing or tonight when I've had a change to test it more thoroughly......

Upload it so others can test if the procedurally generated craters will be an issue

From what I understand, the craters on the mun arent the same for everyone

ahhh yes, this man be of concern. would the save file transfer the "procedural information" to the mun though? another reason im glad the majority of the race is in a static feature of the mun.

expect to see a link within the hour. anything else i should know before uploading the save? as this is the first time i have done so. I know there should be no active vessels.

I have checked the save and it can work ... A couple of the flags appeared under the surface when I loaded them but it was easy to fix by loading each flag in succession and making a new save to start from

It may be the case that each contestant will have to do this due to the procedural nature of the mun and its craters

Anyways, I went to the tracking station and selected to fly the second flag (first one is at the KSC near the launchpad). Then, after the flag loaded and appeared on the surface, I opened the map view and switched to flag 3. After that one had loaded, I opened the map view and switched to flag 4 .... and so on and so on

thank you for testing! I encountered a similar problem doing the Dakar 2017. most of the flags were underground. I just got as close to them as i could.

It will also happen if your terrain detail is set different than from when the initial save was created

@DoctorDavinci  Wow, that thing's a monster!

I'm in for 3h09m stage 1 &  (casual)
              3m10s stage 2     (legit)

Hey, how do you turn on those flag highlights? Mine turned off somehow when the version switched to 1.2.x . And it turns out I am not the greatest of crater navigators!

The stage 1 was nearly legit, but while putzing around looking for the flag I decided to see what would happen if I turned off SAS on my rover. (hint, it didn't end well )

On the plus side, I managed to work a sweet jump in to stage 2!

How long will this low slung drag racer last in a low-g rally race? Probably not long, but boy it's fun while it lasts!

And a few pics from the first stage. I have full video, but it was a half hour real time, and I'm not up for editing that right now :)

Finally, this craft is actually a dragster designed to "function" on Minmus for another challenge. I'll just post the video link in here. Advanced warning: it's silly.

Spoiler

Anyways, it's off to a good start, let's see how long it 'till I miss a landing and explode!
