If You Had A Million Dollars Challenge

Recommended Posts

k5Kg0vU.jpg

So the premise is simple, you've got a million dollars and one launch ... What can you do?

Get something in LKO or set up a comms network around Kebin (or the Mun, or Minmus) ... Remember, one launch and a million bucks is all you got

Over engineering and mission complexity are not only accepted but encouraged ... Mods are welcome but will be listed under a 'MODDED' category (informational and visual mods will be considered as a stock entry ... MechJeb use puts you into the 'MODDED' category due to it's autopilot feature)

NOTE: please provide a list of the mods used, if any, in your entry post

Screenshots or it didn't happen, video is better (In the VAB/SPH, at launch, important parts of the mission ... if it's interesting then we wanna see it)

Show the community what you can do with a million bucks

NOTE: if you're over a million then you are disqualified ... see 'Price Is Right Showcase Showdown'

Additional NOTE: The only restrictions for this challenge are as following:
1- You have a single Launch ... That's it, goodbye, don't collect $200 when you pass go
2- Your creation has to accomplish something Kerbal ... Your design must actually accomplish a task or do something other than being a static that could be made in Kerbal Konstructs
3- You have a million dollars ... That is it, end of story, if you're over 1 million then you are disqualified
4- Remember the following .... it's not what you know, but rather what you can prove in court ... Evidence is required for any assertion

Remember, the closest to 1 million without going over wins the internet

You might want to disallow any form of ISRU since the investment for the hardware is only about 20k and it effectively means infinite fuel which would otherwise make up a significant portion of the mission cost. That said, ISRU could still be used in the spirit of the challenge for something cool like a cheapo interstellar colony ship built around an asteroid (IRL you'd build inside one for radiation protection and gut the core for more than just fuel).

No restrictions of any sort other than what is in the amended OP, which is as folllows:

Okay, I found a design I had that does stuff and costs close to, but not over, $1,000,000.  it is my Deep Space Relay III with attached Plasma Tug.  In LKO, it still has a bit over 15,000m/s of dv, meaning it can easily get to anywhere in the stock system, and, in some cases, beyond.  I was a little inefficient during my ascent (I got a very small amount of re-entry flames for a few seconds) so that number could probably be better.

Total cost: $904,828  (Modded entry)

Mission: Name says it all.  A giant relay dish for deep space (well, at least as deep of space as one can get in KSP), to help guide smaller probes and help get science transmissions back to Kerbin.

Awesome ... Could you please list the mods used as that is not a stock entry

Hey again @DoctorDavinci!

Your premise of this challenge inspired me, you reminded me of that Eminem song:

Spoiler

So I built this:

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=862563447

Did a small test drive with it to the Eve surface and got back to orbit (what's supposed to be the most challenging leg of what I plan), it's looking good out there (after like 50 aerobrakes and just maybe 20 reloads, but these are minors details)!

Plotline: Scrooge McKerman has been given only 50 years to live :P. As a last dying wish, he spent 999 999$ (he's still Scrooge...) and booked the best KSC has to offer to get a taste of the good life among the stars (and planets). He, along with the KSC's A Team (Jeb, Val, Bob and Bill) are gonna go on a luxury cruise throughout the solar system. I plan to do alternative endings and have the viewer choose what he likes: happy ending, drama and tragedy. If only I could dedicate 48 hours / day to this and be immune to, you know, life...

Mods:

Alarm Clock

Transfer Window Planner

Kerbal Engineer Redux

Precise Maneuver

Stock Visual Enhancements

This is why I wish to be considered for the non-modded category; I only use stock parts and these mods only add, ya know, nicer graphics and better precision for executing maneuvers.

You'll be hearing from me as soon as this is done.

  • 3 weeks later...

Hi again @DoctorDavinci.

I finally got some spare time and managed to produce the first part of the promised series.

Here it is:

And now, a day later, part 2:

Part 3 - Dres:

Part 4.1 : Laythe:

Part 4.2 - Vall and Tylo:

Part 4.3 : Bop and Pol:

Part 5 - Eeloo:

I'm gonna keep it unlisted until I finalize the series. I'll probably add the other parts here, not make a new post for each segment. I've already recorded everything and travelled to all them planets, but the editing part is taking me quite a bit of time.

Feedbacks appreciated.

P.S.: Man, I feel like this challenge shoulda been more popular, your premise really inspired me.
