what is the highest point on minmus

Recommended Posts

I drove around there a lot in .15.2, and the highest point I found was 5680m, though I can\'t guarantee that there\'s nothing higher. I had an orbiter going round at 6500m for game-weeks without hitting anything, though. If it was me, I\'d go for 6000m.

I used the ISA-RAM mapper data to find the general location of what\'s most likely the high point, and flew in a rover to check it out. Highest I was able to locate was 5724m.

However, that\'s deep in the high-latitude South. I\'ve pulled off near-equatorial orbits at 5.3 km periapsis altitude, which got within 700m of the surface at times, according to MechJeb.

5724.6001 is precisely the highest altitude, but that is only a single area of the south-east (Lat:-62, Lon:74).

Regardless, you can definitely count a 5750 meter orbit as safe, so long as the space Kraken's orbit-deteriorating effects don't do much to lower it. (had that happen on the Mun in .20, I was trying to get a really low orbit for a challenge, it was in the high 3000s for apoapsis and periapsis, but it started at 5000 each. Eventually, my periapsis got down to under 2000 and I crashed into a crater wall. before that though, I went within 25, or even 15, meters several times on different terrain objects, which for a ship of that size, is basically enough that rotation makes the difference between exploding and orbitting) Also, time-accelerate once you can, because that will prevent the Kraken from causing your orbit to change (deteriorate, it is almost always in the lowering your energy direction for some reason).

Use this: http://www.kerbalmaps.com/charts/elevation_inclination/

and select Minimus. You can see the minimum altitude you can reach depending on inclication. If you're in a 0º orbit you can get down to 5,200m, apparently. I hope this is accurate.

PS: I'm getting an error of "timeout" when using chrome for this site, I used safari/firefox with no issues.
