NASA 3d Models

Recommended Posts

Nasa has released 3D models of various parts and craft including a 70M dish, the Apollo Lander, Apollo-Soyuz, James Webb telescope, asteroids, hurricanes, Saturn V,  Shuttle, SLS, Viking lander, Voyager and many many many more.

I`m posting it here for obvious reasons, those being that hopefully these models will make it into a mod for RSS somehow, one day.

Hi they've been around for ages, nice models too   However they are more suited to rendering/ digital art than being turned into a mod part, in many cases they've been smoothed way beyond what is normal for game models, causing even the simplest cylinder to have many many thousands of polys. while not a problem in it's own right it does have knock on effects later in the import process,  such not being able to use unity to generate convex colliders , so every part would need a custom collider creating that would have less than 255 polys.

While of course anyone so motivated could do the deed. but anyone with any experience would be better off  just using them as a reference for making their own models, the work involved in turning them into a game ready model would likely take a lot longer than making the same from scratch.

Ah, I see. Not being involved in 3D or mod making I was unaware. Still, as you say, they could be used if anyone wants to know the exact shape of that little bump on the side of the lunar lander or something.

It contains some larger shapes like Victoria crater and Tycho too, which I did not expect.
