Yeah, but I don't blame him for that. However, this presentation so far has been very boring. Basically NOTHING new yet.
Raven Industries
One of his pros for steel vs carbon fiber or aluminum alloys: easily modifiable or cannibalized for new uses on Mars or the like, unlike other materials. He really likes his steel... I mean I do too, it's literally one of the most important materials humanity has ever developed but I wasn't expecting him to dedicate about 5 solid minutes of his presentation talking about how great steel is. ETA: ok so I decided to look up the grade of steel he said they were using and this stuff is pretty great. Strength and ductility wise, it seems to be on par with A514 which is a common high strength low alloy steal used in automotive (because it's strong and cheap). Welding doesn't seem to affect the strength much besides the fact that it will be normalized as soon as they perform their first entry maneuver. Raven Industries
Refueling seems to be planned as end to end now, rather than the old side to side thing we've seen previously.

The landing animation is pretty much the only new thing so far. I'm delaying my homework in order to watch this, I hope it gets better. Raven Industries
A bit of a tangent into using aliens to increase defense spending.

ExtremeSquared
Elon denies existence of aliens. Therefore Elon is an alien.

Steel was the unobtanium for almost two thousand years. Yes you could make it sometimes and quality was idiotic hard to replicate. Then stuff changed and we got railways and battlehips
Raven Industries
Is it over already, or is this an intermission?
mikegarrison
So I guess that was it. Nothing really new here for anyone who has been following this. Mostly just a platform for Elon to talk about why we need to go to Mars. Ah, a Q&A session. I don't expect much, but it might have something. Raven Industries
Possibly beginning construction of Mk 3 in about a month, likely the model to first get into orbit. Edit: conflicting information, now it's Mk 4 or 5 that'll be first to orbit, planning on getting there within 6 months, give or take. mikegarrison
Actually, just said Mark 4 or 5 for orbit. Hopes it will be within six months.
Flying dutchman
Elon has never been a good speaker tbh. I just think it's really cool he's over there on that podium answering questions and inspiring people. I also don't get why people are saying that there is not that much new info.. i mean we get almost daily updates from the guy on twitter and since this is pretty much the final design there simply won't be any radical changes to talk about. mikegarrison
Oh, here comes the question about the tweet. Says the bulk of their resources are still focused on Falcon 9 and Crew Dragon. Says they will not have a problem with boiloff. Answering a question about contamination of Mars. Obviously this is not built in a clean room. Why is he now talking about SR-71? I guess it's supposed to be some reference to going fast. "Mars has a massive amount of ice." Is that actually really established? Talking some about sustainable fuels. There's pretty good evidence for it. The issue is that the ice is mixed in with all the dirt everywhere but the poles. How are we going to suck out pure water from the dirty permafrost? mikegarrison
He's saying it will be roomy enough for 100 people. Then he says it's the same volume as the Space Station, on which six people live. Hmm. He says by next year they will be building a raptor engine every day, but for now they build one every 8-10 days.
