You guys ever replaced keys in a gaming keyboard? I bet they have a similar mechanism. You just need to use a little bit of force to pull them out, but it's doable.

Smash to remove, I suppose?

Or just pop them off. The undercut would determine the force required. You'd make a puller tool that reaches in the gaps, gets under, then pushes against the surrounding tiles to pop it off.

Just a lot bigger. Pretty simple, too.

I doubt that contacs that rely on friction/bending only are relyable enough for the tiles. To much vibration on launch, also the dynamic pressure during launch and reentry will put much stress on the connectors. I could imagine a robust latch would be better, one that automaticaly locks when the tile is placed down and can only be undone after the tile is destroyed.

Yeah, quite possible assuming the tile can be destroyed without harming the skin.

That said, multiple points of contact, and an additive to the studs (elastomeric adhesive?) might well work. Also, unlike jacket snaps, designed for reuse, the female side on the tile might be designed for ONE snap, pulling it destroys the female side of the snap.

I just discovered that Boeing's Starliner is more reusable than Crew Dragon. Because the Dragon splashes down, it can't be reused for crew, only cargo, while Starliner lands on land like Soyuz, and can be reused up to 10 times.
