I am pretty sure if we somehow managed to revive the genii of Rocketry and spaceflight and show them the specs of PSLV, those guys will just scream "BUT WHYYYYYYY??" and drop dead again.. Stage 1: Two big solid boosters Stage 2: Two hypergolic rockets, ignited 30 seconds before SRB burnout. Stage 3: Fairly normal cryogenic stage. This is more 'normal' than the PSLV, but it's hardly traditional!

It's pretty similar to Titan IIIE/IV, both of which are classic rockets with a respectable pedigree of NASA payloads (Viking 1 & 2, Voyager 1 & 2, Cassini/Huygens). About the only difference as far as staging is concerned is Titan's extra hypergolic stage.
