RIP, Stanislav Petrov

About 34 years ago, Lt. Colonel Petrov was in charge of early warning monitoring systems that showed a single US missile launch heading for the CCCP.

Procedure would have been to immediately report it up the chain of command, but his judgement told him that the US would not launch a lone missile, and he reported that their own systems had malfunctioned. It turned out the EWS had miss-identified reflections from clouds as a launch.

Thanks for saving the world, Mr. Petrov.
