I like it to i watched this when was shown in TVP (Polish state tv) in Saturday Disney movie block, when i was kid. that's triggered my interest in Space.

I read that's premiere of this show was postponed due resemblance to Challenger incident, the accidental launch of these kids was due faulty SRB, that's forced ground control to launch shuttle.

I read the book of this actually.

One of the robots had befriended one of the kids, and hacked the launch controls to CAUSE a thermal curtain failure- making one of the SRBs ignite during a SSME ground test. They were then forced to light the other SRB and actually launch it so it wouldn't spin out of control and explode.

Except the ship wasn't fully flight-prepped, they didn't have the right communications gear nor was it carrying enough oxygen for them to survive in space to the nearest re-entry window.

I've heard that the Movie didn't do the book justice, but I haven't gotten a chance to see the movie yet.

This often happened to me when I play the KSP that one engine is ignited too late and the rocket curved and hit the ground, now it does not happen to me as often as before :)

I think it could happen as apparently faked flight to the moon, after all, was few classified space shuttle missions, it was a joke, of course ;)

I have question whether the film was based on a book or a book based on the movie?

Yeah, I saw it as a kid. Even then, I was much more interested in Kathryn (the ambitious wanna-be commander, played by Lea Thompson) than Tish (the Valley girl, portrayed by Kelly Preston). I still think smart and capable women are much more attractive than those who "play dumb".

... But not a great movie. FWIW, I recently saw "Countdown", which attempted to be much more "realistic". It was based on the Pligrim Project, a proposed (but never seriously analyzed) plan to beat the Soviet Union to the Moon if closing the technological gap proved more difficult than imagined -- the idea being to land him in a Mercury capsule and send him supplies 22 times a year until a way could be devised to bring him back.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0062827/

It's interesting to note some quirks -- for example, the mountains on the Moon have craggy peaks, which we kind of assumed they would in the absence of erosive forces we were familiar with on Earth (like tectonics and weather).

Anyone else know of attempted realistic space fiction in movies?
