Anything labeled "Debris" disappearing even when not over max debris

In my game, debris is being deleted immediately when a switch away from it.  the problem is that this means, aside from not being able to temporarily label things as debris, anything without a control module gets deleted.  Like the fuel tank you left in orbit for your return.  

In settings, my max debris, is set to 250.  but when I go the space center and look for any debris, there is nothing (zero).

I'm running version 1.3.1.1891 on a Mac Powerbook, OS 10.12.6

One thing to check is whether your tracking station is tracking debris.  Go into the tracking station and look at the row of buttons along the top of the window.  One of those will have an icon that looks like a fuel tank -- just a cylinder.  Make sure it's on.  Wheee!  Where did all that stuff come from?

If that isn't the issue, and the debris is really gone gone, you probably have another setting wrong -- even if you have max debris set, there's another setting to delete debris (don't have the game open at present, so can't quickly check where it is exactly).  If that's set, it won't matter what your max is.

As @Zeiss Ikon said; debris display in the Tracking Station is turned off by default. Click the debris icon and you should see your missing fuel tank.

Debris in 1.3.1 is not showing up in the maps (because of a bug), but it still exists. You can select it in the "ships" column of the Tracking station, once you unfilter the debris.

When I am in the tracking station, the icon for debris lists "0".  No tracked objects are listed.

OK, that certainly sounds wrong. So we need to go one step deeper. Are you running any mods, and have you done a validation on your game (assuming you got it from steam)?
