Linux help

Hi all. So, Ive been toying with the idea of running KSP in a seperate partition on my laptop. Ive installed Mint, got a program called Wine that claims to run Windows games in Linux, dropped my KSP folder onto the desktop and tried to run the .EXE but nothing happens at all. Forgive my dumbness however Ive only ever used Windows before. Can anyone help me or is it easier just to forget the whole idea?

ill give it a try.....thankyou :)

No problem.

I use Mint too.

To be honest I much prefer Linux over Spindows. You will be pleasantly surprised how many of your games are available to your linux installation through steam.

As said, us the native Linux version of KSP, not the .exe under wine.

So delete wine and its folders, download the Linux version of KSP, unpack it in a folder of your choice and have fun.

You don't need a start script (any more), i run it without. Either add the program to your desktop or call it from a terminal directly out of your installation folder with "./KSP.x86_64".

Running the native Linux GoG version here on Mint 18.2 with no problems.

When you buy KSP, you get it for all three platforms.

Sounds like it might be an issue with the GPU driver.  What GPU do you have?

Nvidia NVS 3100M .... rubbish I know yet as I said on Win7 its so much smoother. I believe during the install process of Mint I changed the driver to the Nvidia Official driver, but maybe I got it wrong?

That sounds like if Mint has installed the Nouveau driver, which is "suboptimal" because Nvidia does not work with the open source community.

Install the proprietary Nvidia driver. I don't know how it is called (i use debian), best browse through a Mint forum for the name of the package you must install.

I would go peruse the Linux Mint forums and do some searching for what's best for that particular card.

I'm running a GTX 1050Ti.  I did a bit of research to determine the best Nvidia driver version for LM 18.2 and that card.  At one point, I even upgraded the driver during a Mint update and it broke all my games.  Reverted and everything was fine.

If by "jerky" you mean that the camera moves around extremely fast then you need a startup script with at least "export LC_ALL=C". That is an extremely old problem with any localisation that isn't US english.

Its us - en but the camera doesnt move fast at all. When I click start game and everything moves off to the left its jerky. Even clicking an option seems to have a half second delay before its registered that its been clicked.

Installing a driver from the Nvidia official site. Its taking forever to install though so may have to test it tomorrow. Thanks for your help. Ill be keeping an eye on this thread as even though I wont be at my laptop I have my tablet.

Well, all I can say is thankyou to you all for replying and helping me however after another few hours wasted today on drivers, etc, the linux version of KSP is terrible compared to win7.....certainly on my laptop

After installing the correct, official drivers for my nvidia card, not only did the game not fair any better (was acting like a ZX81), also updating the whole system made the linux taskbar decide to stop working so I found it hard to navigate. Once I uninstalled the correct nvidia driver the taskbar worked again....

Stick with what works is my lesson today :) windows actually does work.....

certainly on my laptop

I think the issue lies with that particular card and the Linux driver for it.  Linux KSP is not the issue.  As you said, it messed with your taskbar as well.

Mint, right?  Which DE are you using?

It was mint 18.3.....dunno about the rest as simply downloaded and installed as the mint site said.

To waste in total around 8 hours trying to get 1 driver to work, even when the cards manufacturer recommended the driver and it still didnt work is a bit too much for me....

Partition removed and C: extended back to normal size....thats a whole day of no KSP I'll miss.....

For DE I was referring to Desktop Environment, so Cinnamon, MATE, XFCE, etc.

Sorry you lost so much time, Linux is certainly not for everyone.  Drivers especially can be frustrating.
