Relays not connecting with eachother?

Recommended Posts

Relays will only bounce off each other if one is obscured from seeing Kerbin. The whole design of the comm network is about getting in contact with Kerbin, so it'll take the shortest path. If the craft can see Kerbin it'll talk directly. This shouldn't cause any issues though. Is there a problem you're seeing?

They use pathfinding to give the fastest connection speed. In the mode I assume you are in (press the button with the dots and lines by the timewarp UI to toggle through) you aren't in network or vessel link mode. those modes will show the connections between individual vessels although a simple vessel link isn't useful in the stock game.

Viewing the entire network, I just see this

Shouldn't the two probes be communicating with eachother as well though?

Hmmm, that's REALLY far for that antenna. The big ol dishes at the KSC are connecting to them but i assume they are just too tiny to connect with each other.

Well, 2 things....

#1:  The only time 1 ship actually talks to another is when you're using a command pod to control a probe, which hardly ever happens.  Otherwise, it's only the distant ship in focus talking to Kerbin.  This distant ship either talks directly to Kerbin by itself or through 1 or more relays along the way if there's something blocking the ship's own LOS back to Kerbin.  The relays function simply as telephone poles, they don't actually take part in the conversation, and they have no reason to talk to each other.

#2:  The network lines drawn on the map depend on a filter setting.  This cycles through the following settings:

  • None:  draws zero communications lines
  • 1st Hop:  shows only the line from the active ship to either Kerbin (if possible) or the 1st relay along the way.
  • Path:  shows the whole path from the active ship to Kerbin, via however many relays that takes.
  • Network:  shows all possible links between all ships and relays, even if none of them are being used at the moment.  This will show a line between your 2 relays (provided they're in range of each other), even if nothing is currently using that path.

The RA2 only has a range of 2Gm (hence the name RA2) when talking to another RA2. In your image, it looks like your two relay sats are about 10Gm apart. You can target one from the other to get a distance readout.

really? I thought the RA-2 has a longer range than that.

The point is that there is no such thing as an Antenna Range. The Link Range need to be calculated from the Antenna Power of both vessels/ground station involved. The AP of the RA-2 is 2Gm AP, while a  Ground station have 2Gm(lvl1), 50Gm(lvl2) or 250Gm(lvl3). The range between a the relay and a lvl3 ground station is a lot bigger than between 2 relays.

Nah. They're too far apart. This is why I don't bother setting up interplanetary relays until I have the RA-15.
