Is it possible to edit a config for a part while in game w/o restarting?

Hi guys - hope you are having a great day!

I was wondering if there was a possibility to create a mod that enables editing part configs without having to restart the game.

My install takes 10-15 min approx. to boot up and I fiddle with mods a lot, and in order to evaluate changes to part configs I need to restart every single time, and it's a pain!

Could a mod help with that or is this an inherent characteristic of KSP?

Thanks in advance!

The basic answer is no, as far as I know... :(
What you could do... but not every mod likes that way, is to go to the cheat menu, " DataBase", and " Reload Database" . This will take some time, but not as long as a full restart. However, with a lot of mods, I suggest not to do it, because some mods won't work good after the reload.

When making MM-files, you could also try to reload the MM-database:

  1. Try Alt+F11
  2. Click on "Quick Reload"
  3. Done!

When I'm editing/writing cfg's/MM-patches for KPS, I do it in another install with only the mod installed I want to change and it's dependencies.

You probably have MM?Go to space center view and press Alt+F11,then choose "reload database".It'll take a while but it's much quicker than reloading whole game.

It'll also reload and aplay MM patches.

It's more common to have times around 3-5 minutes... 10-15 minutes it's a bit strange, unless you have a massive gamedata folder; How much RAM your install uses?

The easier way is to have a Test Install, with no mods or very basic ones. I have one with only HyperEdit, JanitorsCloset, TweakScale and RealPlumes (the last two is to check compatibility). It loads in seconds. You put all the relevant mods in there, do the edits, the tests, and when done move the folders to your Main Install. I also use JanitorsCloset to disable the parts I do not want before moving. It's almost pleasent to edit the files this way.

Also great to avoid causing problems to saves, looking at new mods (especially the ones who have many folders or use shared folders with other mods - there are a pain to uninstall from a big gamedata folder).

"Oh, look, this mod about submarines/BFR/Airplanes is great, I want to take a better look and maybe use some parts from it".

thanks @MaximumThrust! Yeah, I know lower loading times are average but my install is very, and I mean very heavily modded: +140 mods and 150,000 MM patches!

I was doing the separate, lighter install but I wanted to know if I could avoid that method.

Recently I discovered that I can lower the size of the textures. Some mods have 4k textures that are completely unnecessary for me, that weight a lot. Reducing from 4096 to 2048 px can reduce the size to 1/4. Doing that I reduced the size from my Gamedata folder by almost half, and greatly improved the load times.

Won't solve your problem, but maybe can help you reduce the load times. I used this program: https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/12801/
