Self driving cars are not AGI, nor sentient, and won't ever be. Driving is a mechanical task that requires neither capability.

... evidenced by some of the human drivers on the road . If autonomous vehicles didn’t have to be concerned about unpredictable meatbags, they would be easy to develop with modern tech, especially if the roads were built for them (electronic lane markers embedded in the road surface).

You mean just like the robot pallet drivers used in the manufacturing warehouse. They're not infallible either.

I invite you to drive in my country. See how far that philosophy stands.

One, I only care about self driving vehicles here, where I will use or interact with them.

Two, it is true, regardless. If they can identify and negotiate a world with pedestrians, cyclists, pets, etc, it should generalize well enough.

Autonomous cars will end up saving vast numbers of lives. People were afraid of elevators without human operators at first as well.

The metric is only to be safer than human drivers, and humans are awful drivers, and are getting worse, not better. The only reason safety is better is car design, and trauma care. I see distracted (phones) drivers virtually constantly. A substantial fraction of motorists have phones out at any given time. I am confident that a short trip to the grocery store involves passing double digit numbers of cars with drivers texting, etc (both directions, so largely closing cars).

The sooner those people are not driving, the better.

Yes. But also remove the cars.
